NC - Sgt. Mickey Hutchens, 50, shot to death, Winston-Salem, 7 Oct 2009

Reports: 2 NC cops shot, wounded in chase

    Posted: Today at 12:47 p.m.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Two North Carolina police officers have been shot and injured after chasing a suspect on foot through a commercial area of Winston-Salem.

Multiple media reports said the officers were taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center on Wednesday. A hospital spokesman told The Associated Press he had no information about the officers.

WXII-TV reported Forsyth County Sheriff Bill Schatzman visited the hospital's emergency room and said the officers were wounded in "critical places."

Police officials did not return calls from The AP.

The Winston-Salem Journal reported Alpha Commercial Printing owner Daryl Hinshaw said he saw one officer on the ground. Hinshaw said other officers ran toward a creek, after which he heard multiple gunshots.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - One of two police officers shot as they pursued a suspect along Peters Creek Parkway on Wednesday morning is in critical condition at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Sgt. Mickey Hutchens, 50, was critically injured as he and Officer Daniel Clark, 28, chased a suspect into a creek behind a Bojangles restaurant and other businesses in the 1500 block of Peters Creek Parkway around 10:30 a.m.

At a news conference Wednesday afternoon, assistant police chief Barry Rountree said Hutchens was in critical condition and Clark in serious condition at the hospital.

The suspect, identified as Monte Denard Evans of Winston-Salem by the Winston-Salem Journal, was killed. He was also taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

According to Rountree, police received a call from a female employee at the Bojangles on Peters Creek Parkway saying she had seen her ex-husband, who was apparently wanted on outstanding warrants.

The two officers responded and pursued Evans on foot into Salem Creek, where they were both shot. The suspect was shot and killed. Investigators have not said if Evans had a gun.

Witnesses reported hearing six or seven gunshots, and the owner of Alpha Commercial Printing, Daryl Hinshaw, watched the chase and said he saw one officer down.

An employee at Precision Auto said that he saw a man pacing outside the auto shop, then saw the man go to the Bojangles restaurant nearby. The restaurant manager apparently called police. The suspect ran behind Precision Auto, dropped a red backpack and ran into Salem Creek. More information from the Winston-Salem Journal.

Several dozen police cars and ambulances were at or near the Bojangles at 1535 Peters Creek Parkway, while the street was blocked to traffic. One lane has since been opened to traffic. Area businesses were placed under lock down.

"It chokes me up a little bit -- the audacity of someone pulling a gun and possibly ending the two cops' lives," said Chris Mosely, who was watching the investigation along Peters Creeek Parkway. "They're just doing their jobs."

The State Bureau of Investigation is now the lead agency in the investigation, Rountree said.

Two Winston-Salem police officers were wounded and a suspect killed after gunfire followed a foot chase from a fast-food restaurant Wednesday.

City spokesman Ed McNeal said that Sgt. Mickey Hutchens, 50, and Officer Daniel Clark, 28, were seriously injured. Police have not identified the suspect killed in the exchange.

Assistant Police Chief Barry Rountree said Wednesday afternoon that Hutchens, a 27-year veteran of the force, was in critical condition. Clark, who has been on the force for six years, was listed in serious condition.

Rountree told a news conference that police received a call at 10:29 a.m. from a woman who worked at the Bojangles restaurant on Peters Creek Parkway south of the downtown area. Rountree said the caller reported that she had seen her ex-husband, who was wanted on outstanding warrants.

Rountree didn't elaborate on the nature of the warrants.

Police arrived at the restaurant and identified the suspect, who fled on foot, Rountree said.

Hutchens and Clark pursued the man as he fled behind the restaurant. The officers caught up with the man and a struggle followed with all three being shot, Rountree said.

WXII-TV reported Forsyth County Sheriff Bill Schatzman visited the hospital's emergency room and said the officers were wounded in "critical places."
