Sludge lagoon searched for body of missing girl
Wednesday, March 30, 2005
By LISA CORYELL
Staff Writer
HAMILTON - In the chilly morning hours yesterday, a crew of heavy equipment operators and a cadre of state police investigators assembled on the banks of a township sludge pit in hopes of solving a 25-year-old murder and returning a daughter's body to her family.

For almost two decades, police have believed an inoperative lagoon at the township's wastewater treatment plant held the body of Karen Zendrosky, a 16-year-old Bordentown Township girl who disappeared from a Hamilton bowling alley in 1979.

Acting on data gleaned from a 2003 radar scan, they focused their search yesterday on three spots near the far bank of the 2-acre expanse of murky water near Hobson Avenue off South Broad Street.

The search yielded no evidence, but investigators are hopeful that as it continues, their watery excavation will yield the clues they need to crack the long-cold case.

"It would be really nice to end this case after all these years of this family not knowing what happened to their kid," said Donna Fontana, a state police forensic anthropologist.

Zendrosky's family declined to comment on yesterday's search.

It was about seven years after Zendrosky's Oct. 25 disappearance that police began hearing rumors she had been killed in the wooded area behind the sludge lagoon and dumped into the pit's wastewater. The names of several suspects, all Hamilton men in their early 20s, also were circulated.

"We know there were at least two, possibly three people who were there," said Lt. William Sykes, who is overseeing the state police investigation. "This was their party spot back then.

"We think she was there and something went awry, whether she was uncooperative or whether they tried to force themselves on her, something happened and she ended up dead in there. The word on the street is this is where she's at."

Repeated interrogations of the suspects over the years have yielded no hard evidence and surface searches of the pit have been equally unsuccessful.

But still the rumors persisted. Frustrated police have been at a loss.

"We don't have anything to substantiate the talk. We don't have a body. What we want to do is get sufficient evidence to link up everything that has been told to us," Sykes said.

In the fall of 2003, with funding from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the state police commissioned an underwater radar search of the lagoon. Using a floating ground-penetrating radar device, scientists recorded anomalies in the sludge layers that could indicate human remains. Three spots of interest were recorded, Sykes said.

"But we didn't have the money or the ability to do anything with the information," he said, adding it costs about $250,000 per hole to excavate.

Their luck turned when two groups of heavy equipment operators offered to donate their services. Fletcher Creamer and Son Inc., based in Hackensack and the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 825 Training Center in Dayton spent nine hours excavating the first hole yesterday.

Using a metal pipe to cordon off a 10-foot section of the lagoon, the workers pumped water and sludge into a tuck. Once filled, the truck's mucky contents were run through filters in search of human remains. It was slow work, given the thickness of the sludge, and by twilight nothing had been found, Fontana said. But workers were not discouraged.

"We really didn't get down deep enough today," said Lenny DiGilio, lead engineer for Creamer and Son. "We have about two more feet to go before we get to whatever it is that was picked up on the radar. If there's anything in that first hole we'll find it (Wednesday)."

Both groups said yesterday's dig was a radical departure from their usual work moving ground for large construction projects.

They said they donated their services in the spirit of community service and in the hopes of bringing closure to a grieving family.

Sykes said police want that and more.

"Clearly closure is a driving factor for us. It's our desire to get this girl out of here," Sykes said. "But it is also our goal to further this case. We're working toward the arrest and conviction of whoever did this."

Mercer Co. Cold Case Reopened

March 30, 2005 — After 25 years, New Jersey investigators have re-opened the case of a young woman who vanished without a trace.

VIDEO: Nora Muchanic reports

They are now searching a sludge pit in Hamilton Township, Mercer County, hunting for clues on what they think is a murder. And they are using high-tech methods to do it.

It was 1979 when a 16-year-old Burlington County teen disappeared. Police have never been able to find her, but are now plumbing the depths of a murky sludge pit in Hamilton hoping to crack a cold case they've never forgotten.

Teams of state police and heavy equipment operators are sifting through the muck of a sludge pit at Hamilton's Wastewater Treatment plant hoping to find the remains of 16-year-old Karen Zendrosky. The Bordentown teenager disappeared from a nearby bowling alley back in 1979.
"This was known to be a party area. Information we have is that she ended up back here against her will or of her own volition and never left."
In 2003 with money from the Center for Missing and Exploited Children, ground penetrating radar identified 3 areas at the pit that could indicate human remains. Those spots are being surrounded with giant metal pipes.

Lenny DiGilio/Creamer & Sons Engineer: "Vacuum out the site inside the pipe. It's going into the vac truck and then forensics are taking their time going through screening it and checking to see if there's any remains."
Donna Fontana/FORENSIC ANTHROPOLOGIST: "Whole body or part of the body, whatever we can we'll work with and try to make a positive ID."
Because of the materials in the sludge, this is being treated as a hazmat site so investigators are dressed in protective suits as they sift through pile after pile of sediment. The work is slow, dirty, and expensive. Creamer & Sons, a North Jersey equipment company and Local 825 of the Operating Engineers are donating their time and trucks for the project.

Children's advocates say revisiting cold cases like Karen Zendrosky's, even 25 year later, is all about bringing every missing child home.
LaForrest Russell/CTR. MISSING & EXPLOITED: "And to find those that are missing for some length of time so that the families can have closure."
Attempts to contact the teens family were unsuccessful. Police have identified and questioned several suspects over the years and if they get the evidence they need, they fully intend to prosecute those responsible. ...

Police wrap up search for girl's missing body
Tuesday, April 05, 2005
By LISA CORYELL
Staff Writer

HAMILTON - Police searching a township sewer pit for the body of a missing teen uncovered no new evidence yesterday, their fifth and final day of the search.

Police spent five days excavating the 2-acre lagoon in the hopes of uncovering the remains of Karen Zendrosky of Bordentown who disappeared from a township bowling alley in 1979 at the age of 16.

Yesterday's search, focusing on the last of three designated spots of interest, yielded no sign of the missing girl.

"We're wrapping it up here," said Lt. William Sykes, a State Police investigator heading the search. "We got what we got out of that first site. There were some very encouraging things."

Sykes would not elaborate on the dozen or so items recovered from the pit.

"The things we found have to be looked at much more closely," he said. "Twenty five years in a sludge pit can do a lot to items. It will be awhile before we know if they are relevant."

Police have long suspected that Zendrosky was killed in a wooded area frequented as a party spot, then dumped in the sludge lagoon. Suspects have been questioned, but the investigation stalled without a body.

A 2003 search of the pit using ground-penetrating radar revealed three spots that contained organic matter consistent with human remains.

With the help of volunteer, police excavating the sites and searched the sludge for evidence.

Sykes said he was not disappointed with the results.

"It's a big place and the search conditions are awkward. It's a pond but it's not a normal bottom. There's a bottom of four, five, six feet of sludge," he said. "The ideal situation would have been `Voila. There's everything we've been looking for. No doubts. No questions.' But I'm very encouraged that we were finally able to get in there. It's been a long time trying."

Logistics and financial constraints have been the key stumbling blocks over the years, Sykes said.

He said the conclusion of the search does not spell the end of the quest for Zendrosky.

"The investigation has been ongoing for 25 years. Nobody is putting the brakes on it now," he said.

Here is some information on the unknown 1979 NY murder victim known as "Cali Jane Doe". Could there be a connection between Karen Lynn missing on 23 October 1979 and "Cali" found 9 November 1979? "Cali" has her own feature thread in Websleuths Unidentified topic area and there is some discussion on this possible match.

-----------------------------------
Unidentified White Female, 13-19, Located on November 9, 1979 in Caledonia, NY

Unidentified White Female
Located on November 9, 1979 in Caledonia, Livingston County, New York.
Estimated Date of Death is November 8, 1979

Distinguishing Characteristics: She had curly brown, shoulder length hair which had been frosted about four months before her death. The frosted hair was in the process of growing out. She had brown eyes. She was tanned and had visible bikini lines. She had no distinguishing marks. The victim had had no broken bones that would have been in a hospital's records. It didn't look as though she had received much medical attention of any kind.
Clothing: She was wearing a a boy's multi-plaid, button-down shirt, tan corduroy pants, blue knee socks, light blue panties; white exquisite bra; brown lace up, ripple-sole shoes and a red nylon-lined man's windbreaker with black stripes down the arms, marked with the inside label Auto Sports Products, Inc..

DNA: Available in CODIS

Case History

The victim was discovered by a passing motorist at 10.00 in a Caledonia, NY cornfield on November 9, 1979. She was found about 20 feet from the south side of Route 20, about one half mile from the intersection of Route 5.She was fully clothed and there was no evidence that she had been sexually molested. Her pockets had been turned inside out, possibly to remove any identification.

An examination of the girl's stomach contents turned up pieces of meat, corn and potatoes. A waitress from a small dinner in Lima, New York, remembered seeing the girl the night before the murder, but she couldn't remember anything more. She died of two gunshot wounds; one to the back and one to the front of her head. The coroner estimated that she was killed the previous night, (November 8), the gunshot wound to her head was inflicted prior to the back wound. The victim was apparently shot by the road where a blood spot marked the earth. Then she was dragged into the cornfield and shot again.Police speculated that the murder weapon used was a .38-caliber handgun. Ballistics experts dug up a slug buried in the dirt underneath the victim. The slug was tested against literally hundreds of other bullets fired from guns seized by police. Over the years, the Livingston County probes traced weapons to as far away as Canada, Europe, and Mexico, but they were never able to match the slug to a murder weapon.Several truckers called in with information about a young girl who was traveling and catching rides where she could. One trucker swore he saw the girl the night before she was murdered trying to hitch a ride to Boston from a nearby truck stop.

Police have followed up over 10,000 leads, all to no avail.

Jane Doe rests in Dansville, New York. The inscription says, "Lest we forget an unidentified girl. November 9. 1979. And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."

Pollen samples taken from the victim's clothing were determined to have come from only four places: Arizona, California, South Florida, or Mexico.

Jewelry
The victim was wearing the following necklace, made with silver beads and three small turquoise stones, one resembling a bird. The necklace was probably homemade, possibly native American, but the best detectives could figure was that it was made somewhere in the Southwest.

The victim was also wearing two key chains that were attached to the front belt loops of her jeans. One key chain, in the shape of a heart, was inscribed, "He who holds the Key can open my heart." The other key chain held the key that fit the small silver heart. The key chains could have been bought in almost any roadside gift shop.

Additional Case Information

Locale of Region
Caledonia, NY is located in the Finger Lakes region of the state and is close in proximity to the Canadian border. Some theories about the victim's identity include the possibility that she was not American, but Canadian. Searches of the Canadian missing persons' databases have not provided any information on a possible ID match for this victim. Route 20 runs parallel to Interstate 90. The crime scene was just past the bifurcation of Routes 5 and 20 on the south side of the road. On the north side, a small pull-off for truckers and motorists offered a rest area for travelers.

Tanned Complexion of the Victim
She had tan lines, suggesting that she had recently lain in the sun in a halter top. Tanning salons were not common in 1979, it is believed that she had recently vacationed somewhere tropical or was from a region more conducive to tanning in November. Furthermore, the victim's hair was lightly frosted in the front, a hairstyle popular on the beach.

Clothing Manufacturer

Auto Sports Products. The jackets were a one-shot promotional gimmick. There was no way to track where they had gone after they were distributed.

One caller told investigators that she thought the victim's shoes were popular in the Venjiont area during the late 1970s.

Karen has been ruled out as Caledonia Jane Doe

Does anyone know if this is her mother? If so, I would like to send out condolences to the family. I've been busy sleuthing on the 1UFNY (Cali-Doe) case, whom a lot of people seem to think is Zendrosky, and now, like all of us here, whether she is or isn't 1UFNY, I am now pulled to her case as well. Much love to the Zendroskys.

I would think it is her mom.

Could she be the Walker County Jane Doe in Walker County TX? While found nude, She was seen a day prior, wearing a yellow sweatshirt. There is something about her nose in the post mortem pictures, that strike a similarity to the only picture of Karen's I can find. http://doenetwork.org/cases/91uftx.html

This girl has been missing long enough, wonder if they would consider searching the sludge pit again?
Are they quite sure Karen is there, could she not be hidden somewhere in or closer to the bowling alley?
Surprised that the perps would possibly dump the body at the pit, considering the trouble to carry someone there, plus hard to see at night, and the perps would get noticeably muddy and smelly.
imo, speculation.

Karen has been ruled out as Walker County Jane Doe
