Canada - Justin Rutter, 14, Ottawa, Ont, 8 Oct 2009

The search continued Tuesday for a 14-year-old Ottawa boy who went missing four days earlier.
Ottawa police confirmed Tuesday morning that Justin Rutter has still not been found, despite a massive search by his family Monday.
Justin parted ways with a friend at 10 p.m. Thursday on Côté Street near St. Laurent Boulevard after leaving his home in Lowertown in the afternoon, said an Ottawa police news release.
He had told the friend he didn't want to go home and wanted to stay out late or all night, the release said.
"While there are indicators that would suggest it's a runaway, we just don't go on that premise," said Ottawa police Sgt. Mark Houldsworth.
On Monday, Justin's family organized a massive search in Lowertown, Vanier, the Byward Market, and along St. Laurent Boulevard in an effort to find him. Around 75 people took part, putting up posters with his photo and description along the street. They have also posted the information online.
His mother, Jaye Rutter, said he had never spent a night away from home before.

Unconfirmed sighting of missing Ottawa teen

A missing Ottawa teen may have been spotted at a pizza joint on McArthur Avenue on Sunday night, according to police.
The teen's family says a video has also surfaced, which might show 14-year-old Justin Rutter being beaten up.
"It's the toughest thing I know I'm ever going to go through," said Preston MacLaren, whose son has been missing for six days.
"I haven't stopped crying. My wife's having pains, some serious pain only a mother can have."
MacLaren's teenaged son hasn't returned to his Lowertown home since going out with friends on Thursday. He apparently told his friend he wanted to stay out late, possibly all night, according to police.

« On s'inquiète tellement pour lui, parce que ce n'est pas normal qu'il soit parti comme ça. Avec chaque jour qui passe, ça devient de plus en plus sérieux. On se sent vraiment avec les mains attachées », soutient Diane Veilleux, la grand-mère du disparu.

Family begs for Justin to check in

Break from home OK if boy needs it, family friend says

OTTAWA — Justin Rutter doesn’t have to come home if he doesn’t want to, his family says. The most important thing is to let them know he’s OK.

Justin, was last seen the night of Oct. 8. His family is torn between the possibilities that he ran away or met with misfortune.

Late in the day Wednesday, police issued a plea stressing to Justin or anyone in contact with him, “that he is not in trouble whatsoever with the police.”

“If he has run away, obviously he has his reasons in his mind that he’s run away,” she said, adding that if Justin needs to spend some time somewhere else, no one will force him to go home. But he should call his parents and let them know he’s all right.

“They deserve the right and the peace of mind to know he’s safe. They’re his parents,” Lafrance said.

“I’m fine with that, as long as he’s safe. That’s all I need to know,” [his mother] said. “We can’t continue like this.”

Justin is described as white, about five-foot-four and 110 pounds with a slim build, short, light-brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing dark-blue jeans.

Anyone with information about Justin or his whereabouts is asked to call the Ottawa Police Youth Intervention and Diversion Section at 613-236-1222, ext. 5355, or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477.

Hundreds of volunteers are helping to look for Justin. Facebook sizzles with information and ideas, police are chasing down leads rapidly, and much of the city has been covered in posters of his face. Family and friends have been working around the clock, because they just don’t know what’s happened.

Preston McLaren says his son was apparently in an altercation with the brother of a girl he liked before he disappeared.

"Confirmed Sighting of Missing Ottawa Teen

    Daniel Proussalidis
    Friday, October 16, 2009

Ottawa Police have one confirmed sighting of missing 14-year-old Justin Rutter in the Vanier area.

They have not given a specific location for that, though.

On Wednesday night, Justin spoke to friends stressing that he did not want to return home.

The teenager was wearing a white hooded coat or sweat-shirt at the time.

Justin was reported missing on Thursday of last week after he did not return home from an outing with a friend."

Additional links regarding sighting of Justin

"That information was passed on to police, who feel confident enough to confirm that the boy was seen. It’s believed Justin has also told other friends he does not want to go home.

The sighting appears to confirm a police theory that Justin, missing since Oct. 8, has run away, but police say their investigation is not complete."
