CARROLL, Iowa -- Police said they had no trouble identifying two men accused of trying to break into a Carroll apartment.

Police were responding to a call about an attempted burglary when they pulled over a car matching the alleged suspects' vehicle. Inside the car, officers found two men with their faces blackened with permanent marker.

Police said the caller described two men with painted faces attempting to break into an apartment Friday night before driving off.

Cayler said he's been fielding calls about the case from news media outlets from all over the country -- mostly because of their funny-looking mug shots.

"I've been chief here almost 25 years, been with the department 28½ years and I've seen a lot of things that make me laugh and weird things but this was probably the best combination of the two -- strangely weird and hilariously funny all at the same time."
 
One more thing here. "Permanent" marker. You'd think the word "Permanent" would give them a clue that it means "not easily removed". Were they going to stay inside for a week until it disappeared?

Nah, permanent is three syllables... beyond them. They probably thought it would make their hair curly.
