"NAVAJO, N.M. (KRQE) - Federal and tribal investigators are looking for witnesses and a missing car after a nun who spent 10 years at a mission church on the Navajo reservation was murdered over the weekend.
Sister Marguerite Bartz, 64, was found Sunday morning in her convent home in Navajo about 40 miles northwest of Gallup. A colleague found Bartz's body Sunday morning after going to check on her when she failed to appear for Mass."

NAVAJO, N.M. (AP) -- A vehicle belonging to a nun slain on the Navajo Indian reservation has been recovered in Arizona, authorities said Tuesday.

FBI spokesman Darrin Jones said he cannot disclose where in Arizona the vehicle was located. He said authorities were waiting on autopsy results and hope to release additional details surrounding the case later in the day.

A teenager was charged Friday with killing a nun after allegedly breaking into her trailer home on the Navajo Indian reservation in search of cash or valuable items.

Federal authorities accused Reehahlio Carroll, 18, of Navajo of "unlawful killing of a human being with malice aforethought" in the death of 64-year-old Sister Marguerite Bartz, who served at St. Berard Catholic Church in Navajo.

According to the federal criminal complaint, Carroll told investigators he broke into Bartz's trailer home shortly after midnight Sunday looking for cash or valuable items when Bartz struck him in the face with a shoe.

He hit her with a flashlight, knocking her to the ground, then hit her in the head five or six times with the flashlight and kicked her in the back and face, the complaint alleged.

Carroll left the room, searching for more items in the trailer, but heard Bartz screaming.

"In an effort to silence the woman, Reehahlio Carroll took a black shirt that was in the room and, while standing over the woman's body, tied the shirt over the woman's mouth, fastening the shirt with a knot tied at the back of the woman's head," the complaint said.

I'm glad they caught him. I'm betting his robbery was so he could go buy drugs. He looks extremely thin for his height in that above link.. horrible.
Now he can go to prison for life.

GALLUP, N.M. -- A slain Catholic nun who lived and worked on the Navajo Nation of western New Mexico was laid to rest Saturday.

A tearful, standing-room only crowd at Gallup's Sacred Heart Cathedral attended funeral Mass for 64-year-old Sister Marguerite Bartz.

Many wore a variety of memorial ribbons on their shirts, jackets and blouses in honor of Bartz.

Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament President Patricia Shuchalaski told mourners that during her 43 years as a Catholic nun, Bartz showed her compassion daily for God and for God's people -- especially the poor.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Albuquerque said Thursday that 18-year-old Reehahlio Carroll also is charged with burglary and transporting a stolen vehicle in interstate commerce.

i wonder why he's not being tried in tribal courts? would it be because the victim was just living on the reservation and not a member of the tribe?

WE must get tougher laws or we are at the effect of an ailing society.

It just keeps on getting worse. What is going to happen about tougher Laws?
 
I live in New Mexico about 20 miles from where this happened, and it is truly disgusting and terribly sad. He broke into her house and what he did to that poor woman made me sick. They didnt put in the newpaper account what he really did to her. I found out the real story on PACER the federal courts website.

Hope he gets the death penalty since we have it here in NM.

Indian on non-Indian crime in Indian Country will be prosecuted in Federal Court, either from the MCA, or the Indian Country Crimes Act (§1152) (unless the Indian was punished by the tribe). Non-Indian on Indian crime in Indian Country will be prosecuted in Federal court using ICCA. Non-Indian on non-Indian crime in Indian Country will be prosecuted by the state. Wikipedia

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A man who beat a nun over the head with a flashlight and then strangled her to quiet her moans pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in federal court Friday under a deal that saved him a possible mandatory life sentence.

Reehahlio Carroll faces 40 years in prison without parole in the 2009 killing of Sister Marguerite Bartz, 64, who interrupted a burglary at her home on the St. Berard Mission in the community of Navajo on the Navajo Indian Reservation in northwestern New Mexico.

U.S. District Judge William Johnson accepted the plea but formal sentencing still needs to be scheduled. Carroll faced a mandatory life term if convicted of the original charges that included first-degree murder.
