One wonders why it took them so long and if Rachanda might still be alive today if they had gotten him sooner for the murder of Kaye Turner.

I've just called in a possible match to a Linn County UID, though it's very unlikely and there are virtually no identifiers, but think its geographic proximity makes it worth a punt at the very least.

Cases like this make me seeth with rage! :banghead: If still alive Ackroyd should be grilled by LE on her whereabouts. Is there any way to find out if he's still alive or his incarceration status?

There are a number of different ways to locate people. Discussing all those methods would probably fill a book.

But in regard to inmates, that CAN be easy - depending on when the person was incarcerated, whether or not they are still living, and most importantly - in what state they were incarcertated.

If you google "Free Inmate Locator", you will find some sites which have links to all the state inmate registries and to Federal inmate registries as well.

If the person is still alive and still in prison, you can usually locate them pretty fast, but you might have to try a number of different registries one at a time. They are not all connected. Each has different bits of information.

Some registries, like Michigan's will list inmates going way back to the 1960's or earlier - even if they only served a year and was released.

Some registries include information about deaths in prison, but other state registries simply delete names when the inmate dies or is released.

Give it a try and see what you come up with.

Also, you can often search on-line court decisions and appeals which might produce some interesting information and leads.

Thanks Richard; he's serving life w/o parole, as is his hunting partner Roger Dale Beck who was also convicted for the murder of Kay Turner. Apparently claimed to have found Turner's body, 8 months after her disappearance, as the shallow grave had been disturbed by animals. Sadly, I think if he had he been disposing of another body he wouldn't have made a similar mistake :banghead: but great to see that the LE have at least managed to take him off the streets

I received an email from Dr. Vance of the Oregon ME's office. They're doing a DNA test on the neurocranium, she said she'll email me when the results are in. I'll keep y'all posted.

THANK YOU Linn County Sheriff's department! They are the BEST! :heartluv:

Wednesday afternoon, Pickle’s stepfather John Arthur Ackroyd, 63, was charged with her murder in Linn County Circuit Court. Bail was set at $1 million by Judge Carol Bispham.

Ackroyd was represented by Lane County attorney Elizabeth Baker, who said she knew little about the murder case and had been contacted to represent Ackroyd only a few hours before the arraignment.

A resolution conference was set for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 8.

One can only wonder how many others he killed before and after.

Due to the length, I can post her section entirely:
John Ackroyd was arrested in 2013 and charged with murder regarding the 1990 disappearance of his 13-year-old stepdaughter, Rachanda Lee Pickle. The family lived near the Santiam Junction, east of Sweet Home. Ackroyd was one of two decades-old cold case murder arrests made by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office in 2013. No court hearings are currently set in the case.

Details of plea deal in 1990 cold case killing finally revealed

In fall 2013, according to the unsealed court records, Ackroyd agreed not to seek parole and to decline release even if he became eligible in exchange for his no contest plea in his stepdaughter's death.

As part of their negotiations, prosecutors pressed Ackroyd to disclose her whereabouts; he refused to say.

Linn County District Attorney Doug Marteeny said he wanted to ensure Ackroyd would spend the rest of his life in prison.

Rachanda Pickle's brother, Byron Pickle, was consulted during the state's negotiations with Ackroyd, Marteeny said.

"The settlement reached a point where we were able to have the certainty that he would be in prison forever," Marteeny told The Oregonian/OregonLive. "We asked the brother what his desire was and his desire to take this deal and keep him in prison forever."

It was important to Ackroyd to have his plea sealed, prosecutors said.

"That was something that he wanted," said George Eder, chief deputy district attorney for Linn County. "He said, 'I will give a plea but I want the case to stop at this point and it not be announced that I have entered the plea and in return I won't ever try to get out of prison.'"

Russell Barnett, a Portland criminal defense lawyer who represented Ackroyd along with Elizabeth Baker, declined to say why Ackroyd wanted the deal to remain secret.

"It was the best resolution for him, for the case, at the time," Barnett said.
