A search for a missing 97-year-old man ended sadly when Coast Guard, Washington State Ferries and local police officers found the mans wifes cane at the Mukilteo ferry dock while investigating reports of a body seen floating in the water near the dock.

Mukilteo police Chief Mike Murphy said a body was recovered Sunday morning; the medical examiner hasnt yet released the identity, but officials believe it is most likely that of missing Everett resident Harold Hal Ersett Higgins, 97, who disappeared from his assisted living facility.

Coast Guard spokesman David Marin told police that at about 10 a.m. Thursday, two witnesses reported seeing a person wearing a brown hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and black sneakers floating in the water. The witnesses, independent of one another, described the same person, police said.

WSF officials also told Murphy they had viewed video surveillance of the area around the dock and saw a man jump. The report wasnt clear if hed jumped from the dock or the boat, Murphy said.
