Please help in finding answers to the disappearance of a Lake Cowichan man Darreld Rayner. He disappeared May 7, 2007 and has not been seen since. Darreld was 52 when he went missing. He was a father and a husband, he was very pro-union and very vocal about important key forestry issues facing BC today. He was a long time employee of the Youbou saw mill before it shut down. You still find articles and letters online still today written by Darreld Rayner. Darreld was an active member of the Youbou Timberless Society. But the question still remains, how does a guy go missing on a walk? How did he just vanish into thin air?

Below is a copy of the RCMP Press Release from 2007.

Search For Missing Hiker Continues

LAKE COWICHAN, B.C., May 11, 2007- Searchers are on day five of a search for a missing hiker near Lake Cowichan.

Lake Cowichan RCMP continue to work with Search & Rescue as well as volunteers in an attempt to locate Darreld Rayner, a 52 year old Lake Cowichan man who went missing on May 07, 2007. Mr. Rayner is an experienced hiker that went for his usual hike approximately two miles Southwest of Lake Cowichan on the Fairservice Mainline, a logging road.

Cowichan Valley Search and Rescue has had the assistance of Saltspring Island Search and Rescue as well as searchers from Nanaimo, Ladysmith, Victoria and volunteers from Shure Span. The RCMP have assisted in the search with members of the Lake Cowichan Detachment, two dog handlers and the RCMP Helicopter. Searchers and volunteers have worked tirelessly both in the wooded area and by going door to door distributing missing posters and asking residents in the area to check their property for anything that may be suspicious. On Thursday, May 10, 2007 there were over 100 Search and Rescue personnel on the ground and at the end of the day, the combined total of search hours for the week was approximately 2600 hours.

Searchers are continuing to follow up on any possibilities and the status of the search will be determined at days end.

Here is another article about Rayner. This one was about a Chinesse Grave Stie that Darreld was bringing to light out at the former Youbou Mill Site.

Chinesse Grave Site

In March 2002, the ASBC-NB was contacted by Darreld Rayner, concerned citizen and member of the Youbou Timberless Society, about the possible existence of Chinese graves on the former Youbou Mill site near Youbou on southern Vancouver Island. His concern was that the dismantling of the Youbou mill and the construction of a go-kart track might threaten the graves, and alluded to the existence of many other gravesites near the property.

I am thinking cougars or bears. Body could be dragged deep in the woods.

Good point but no Grizzlies on Vancouver Island, just black bears, cougar go for the jugular and the neck area for a kill it would be messy, not only that but if he had a small dog with him the cougar would make a meal out of the dog first and run off with it up a tree or off in the woods. And a bear or Cougar can only drag so far.

Keep in mind the RCMP Press Release is based on what the RCMP knew at the time. The question is did he ever leave his home? Was the coffee cup and dog a lead in the wrong direction? What witnesses are there that saw Darreld alive that day period? Did anyone actually see him on the trails or Fair Service Main.

over 2600 hundred search hours went in all around the bush from where Darreld lived into the bush near and around Fair Service Logging Road.

I really doubt Darreld was lost in the woods. Especially with the large search area all around there for several kilometers, something would have been found if it was bear or cougar, cougars don't eat clothes or shoes, neither do bears.

I have hiked that same area and the odds of seeing a cougar during the day time are very nill. More likely to see a black bear, just yell at them and they take off running. Cougars are more active at night. Even if he was mauled or hurt by animals there would be some signs of it somewhere. Especially with all the bush that was searched.

Not just 2600 hours of searching but helicopter, two dog handlers, lots of volunteers combing kilometers after kilometer of bush. Nothing! The searchers line up and comb the bush, nothing, nothing has been found.

It sounds to me that you suspect foul play. Are you concerned that perhaps there was some sort of political concern because of his activism?

I am extremely suspicious Darreld Rayner was the victim of foul play.

Here is a question for all of you, how much is someones life worth? Could there be motive if millions of dollars were at stake?

Let me ask all of you something, have you ever heard of a corrupt politician (S) before?

Will people do strange things for a large amount of money???????

Of course they will, but if these are people with connections, it would be extremely hard to solve. It's happened before.

Did you know Darreld?

[h=1]Human remains found in B.C. may help solve decade-old disappearance[/h]
The discovery of human remains in Lake Cowichan, B.C., may bring a family closer to finding out the fate of a loved one who disappeared more than a decade ago.

Fifty-two-year-old Darreld Rayner was last seen in May 2007 walking his dog along a logging road in the town of Lake Cowichan.

“We were dumbfounded,” the man’s son, Rick Rayner, told CTV News on Thursday. “It’s been almost 11 years. We want closure. We want healing for the family.”

The family is awaiting the results of a DNA test to confirm whether or not the remains are Darreld’s -- something that could take up to a month.

[h=1]Human remains found in Lake Cowichan identified as missing hiker[/h]
The remains found on Dec. 22, 2017 have been identified as Darreld Stanley Rayner, a Lake Cowichan resident who was last seen walking his dog along a logging road in May 2007.
The remains were found near South Shore Road in a "steep and secluded" area that required a coordinated effort from search and rescue members and RCMP.

DNA testing has since confirmed the remains are Rayner's.

VIDEO: Memorial offers friends, family chance to remember Darreld Rayner
May 16, 2018

Snipped...
...“Before we get into remembering the many good things about this special man, the family has asked me to address a particular concern for them. When the coroner cannot determine a cause of death, people tend to speculate without real facts. There are two things, I believe, we can all agree on today. First, that the coroner could not determine the cause of passing. And, secondly, that the family, and anyone who knew Darreld are 100 per cent sure that he had no hand in his own passing. He loved his family too much,” James said, and was greeted with applause when he finished that statement.

“Darreld was known to have said: ‘That’s the coward’s way out’,” he said
