Human remains found in Norcross

by Staff reportsDecember 10, 2009 | 08:09 PM
GWINNETT COUNTY — Gwinnett County police have confirmed human remains were found Dec. 6 by a resident walking his dog off Forest Vale Drive at about 12:30 p.m.

What’s more, investigators believe the unidentified victim, who died months ago, was murdered.

Police said the resident was playing with his dog in the woods when it discovered what appeared to be skeletal remains.

The scene was subsequently examined and processed by county crime scene investigators, detectives and personnel from the Medical Examiner’s Office. The skeletal remains were then collected and transported to the Gwinnett County Police Department Morgue, where an autopsy was performed that indicated the remains were human.

Maybe she was a runaway with a bag packed?

what race/ethnicity do they think she is? do they have a height/weight estimate? I really hope there's more to go on than clothing.

Viola looks like a good possibility, since she was heading to Atlanta with a suitcase. She seems a bit older than their initial estimate, but not that far off.

Photographs of Maritza show a beautiful teenager with a winning smile. Family members said she was a sweet girl with a fiercely independent streak. She was open at home and school about being a lesbian... But Maritza’s grin masked bouts of depression and loneliness. Born in Texas and raised in Georgia, Maritza chose to remain behind two years ago when her mother and four siblings returned to Mexico...

Nothing seemed amiss on Aug. 23 when Maritza texted her aunt to ask permission to go to the movies with a friend. But the teenager never returned home. Olvera said Maritza had left home before, but she usually would answer her phone and return a few days later. This time was different...

Her concerns mounted when, while looking through Maritza’s things one day, Olvera stumbled upon something chilling. It was a memory card containing some strange photographs that Maritza had taken of herself, as if to document some unknown offense. The photographs depicted Maritza’s arms and legs, mottled with bruises...
