Bloodhounds, helicopters and investigators descended on a Fullerton neighborhood this morning to look for a 21-year-old man and a dog who have been missing since Saturday afternoon, Fullerton Police officials said.

James Wernke, a 21-year-old Fullerton man, was last seen at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday walking out the door of his girlfriend's mother's house to walk her yellow Labrador, family and friends said.

Police and search teams, she said, are checking not only area trails Wernke was known to take Kealie running on, but also nearby golf courses.
At 6'4" and about 190 pounds, police are confident that Wernke wouldn't be an easy person to attack.
"He's a big guy," Bastreri said. "I don't think anybody would try to abduct him or assault him."

Seems odd. Taking the dog doesn't fit in with his disappearing voluntarily. But someone kidnapping him would make no sense either. What would be the point of it? An accident of some kind makes the most sense, although having an accident while walking a Lab and the Lab not returning home at some point is puzzling.

very good story on the case...

He was tracked to a 7/11 store by bloodhounds where they lost the trail. They are pulling tape to see if he is caught in any of the footage.

He is a nursing student and a star baseball player..

Hope he and the dog are found soon! This is a strange one!

Sounds like maybe the stress got to him. finals coming up, wanting to go to the NY college, spat with gf about not spending much time at home. maybe he was thinking the gf of 3yrs was cheating on him and couldn't take the stress. IDK this one is strange...

I do not know what to think. If he was leaving on his own, why take the dog? If he met up with friends, why not take the dog home? This just does not make sense to me.

Police this morning viewed surveillance tapes from a 7-Eleven and another business in the area around Sunnywood Drive where Wernke last was seen, and were following up possible leads – but as of late morning, nothing solid had developed.

The dog is missing too; checks with local animal shelters have turned up nothing

so does that mean that he left the 7-11 and continued down the road walking or in a car? was it a busy road? could someone have hit him? but that still doesnt explain the dog, i dont think the dog would have went with a stranger?? im not sure whether he was leaving to walk the dog or going specifically to 7-11 and just brought the dog along or what? maybe we will know more when the footage from 7-11 is reviewed? wonder if there are any other businesses with cameras that may have him? strange.

[REVISED ] this is a different yellow lab from the one I saw in his pics --different name anyway
He appears to have just been going for a walk, as he did not take his wallet?
    This is strange

    Nellie,
one of the earlier links said the blood hounds lost his tracks at the 7-11 but it makes me further wonder if it was the dog's scent they lost??? or his???? It did also say that he was last sighted near the 7-11.

This is one STRANGE STRANGE STRANGE case. I pray for the family and his girlfriend.

I agree that he was taking the dog for a quick walk. He had talked to his mother at one o'clock that afternoon and told her he had just gotten back from the gym (she remarked to him that it sounded like he had just woken up but he told her he just got home from the gym). This tells me he wasn't going out for some long run or something. I am a runner... and if going out on a run you just don't take your phone and your wallet... He took his phone when he went out with the dog so this tells me it could have been a quick walk where he could use the phone while he walked if he wanted.

I wonder WHEN the phone was turned off/died? Was it after or before he left on the walk?

It said in the abc article that "Saturday afternoon as he leashed up a friend's Labrador retriever for a walk."

So it wasn't his dog. I believe the dog was his girlfriend's mother.
