Two unidentified African American males entered the office and displayed weapons. Mr. Bass and niece were taken to the living quarters of the office where the niece was locked in the bathroom. Though known as a thorough and careful investigator, Cassell didn't have much luck on his first homicide. In 1976, motel owner Leroy F. Bass, 68, was killed in the bedroom of his motel in Elkridge by a single bullet through his head. Cassell suspected Bass was killed during a robbery. He even had a few good leads, including descriptions of the attackers provided by Bass' 11-year-old niece. The killers locked her in the bathroom minutes before the shooting.

Despite six months of tough work, the leads dried up. Cassell said he still thinks about the case almost every day. "You hope somewhere along the line you're going to get a break," he said. "You try not to let these things get personal. But they are to me."
