Timber workers around noon today found a human skull near Old Mulga Loop Road and New Mulga Loop Road, Birmingham police announced tonight.
Officers from the West Precinct searched the area, but were unable to find additional remains.
The Jefferson County Coroner's Office took the skull and said it appears to be that of a white male.
Deputy Coroner Chris Moore said tonight they don't know the cause of death, identity, or whether this was a case of foul play.
Anyone with information pertaining to the case is asked to contact the Birmingham Police Homicide Unit at 254-1764 or CrimeStoppers at 254-7777.

COLBERT COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- A skull was found in a Colbert County creek.

"A friend of mine told me that he found a skull in these cabins in Foxtrap Creek. I didn't believe him so I went and checked it out, found it...it shocked me. I was surprised, so I took it to the police department." The man didn't want to be identified.

He took these pictures of the skull, comparing it to the size of a beer can.

He has his an idea about who it may be-- a young girl who went missing nearly two decades ago from Franklin County.

“They didn’t find anything else of any significance,” May said.

No other bones or anything that might help identify the person were found at the scene. There were some teeth in the skull.

Richard Cole, who lives in the Fox Trap community, said he went to the scene Friday after a friend told him he had found a skull while hunting for arrowheads.

Cole said the skull was found about a foot deep in the ground near an overhang beside a creek. The area being searched was adjacent to a large cow pasture. He said the skull was found just before dark.

“I thought it looked like a little kid,” Cole said.

May said investigators told him the skull belonged to an adult, not a child.

“It might be anything from a Native American burial to a Civil War burial — we just don't know,” May said. “We have all those things to consider.”

Colbert County Sheriff Ronnie May said the mystery of the skull found in a rural part of the county in January is now over.

May said his office received information Monday that the skull is that of an adult Native American female. Those results were issued from A. Joanne Curtin with University of West Florida, Department of Anthropology, May said.

May said he has notified the property owner, who is in Florida, as well as the Alabama Historical Society.

“We're waiting on the remains to be returned to us so we can talk with the historical society and see who they want us to turn the remains over to for re-burial,” the sheriff said.
