UPDATED: 11:45 pm CST January 7, 2010

HARRISONVILLE, Mo. -- A mother and father in Cass County came home on Thursday to find their teenage daughter killed.

A teenage boy, who was a relative they'd taken in, was missing and became a suspect, authorities said. The boy had lived in the home for about two years, KMBC's Martin Augustine reported.

The girl's body was found in a home in the 30200 block of South Hess Road, which is southwest of Harrisonville. The cause of death is under investigation. Her name was not released.

Why are our children killing our children? If we don't find the answer to this question and ADDRESS it, we are doomed! Truly! Here is a family that tried to help extended family and look what happened. I am so sad for this family AND our nation!

Cass County teen killed; relative arrested

HARRISONVILLE, Mo. (AP) _ Cass County authorities have identified a teenage girl who was found dead in her home south of Harrisonville. The Cass County Sheriff's Office says 14-year-old Katie Rios was found by her parents around 2 p.m. Thursday. A teenage boy who lived in the same home about 45 miles south of Kansas City has been arrested in her death. The cause of death was not released. Cass County Sheriff's spokesman Cpl. Kevin Tieman says law officers tracked the suspect through nearby woods for three hours before finding him at a home three miles away. Tieman says the suspect is related to the victim but would not say how they were related. The suspect is in juvenile custody.

A Judge is deciding weather the relative who stabbed this beautiful girl to death should be tried as an adult or juvie in court.

According to this article the two had an argument. So you stab someone to death after her parents took you in? Senseless. I'm so sorry lil girl. Her poor parents.

OMG, that article states that her 2 younger siblings were home when he killed her! Thank God they were not harmed. This is heartwrenching! The parents were trying to help out a family member, a child. It says he lived with them for almost 3 years so that would have made him 13 to 14 yo when they took him in? I wonder how he came to live with them.

The trial of 18-year-old Reyes Olivas began on Wednesday, and by Thursday afternoon the jury had reached its verdict of guilty of first-degree murder and armed criminal action after just 25 minutes of deliberation.
According to court records, Olivas, who was 16 at the time, and 14-year-old Katie Rios began arguing while watching television. Police believe Olivas became enraged when Rios called him stupid and grabbed an eight-inch knife off the kitchen counter and threatened her with it.
Police say Rios then picked up the phone to call her parents, who were on their way home from Kansas City. That’s when they say Olivas stabbed her, twice in the abdomen and once in the back.

Still looking for his sentencing
