Deceased/Not Found AK - Scott Coville, 26, Sitka, 12 April 1988 *J. Reth guilty*

Wow! I sure hope there are follow up stories on this case. I wonder what new evidence was uncovered? It must be pretty damning to arrest her. Hopefully this will lead to locating his remains so that he can be properly laid to rest. Prayers to his family.

Okay, this is the longest of the long shots but...

Scott Coville was 26 when he disappeared in Alaska in 1988. He was born April 12 1962, which would make him considerably younger than Benjaman and really well outside my comfort zone for a match on age grounds.

Coloring is right on, and there seems to be a fair amount of similarity on facial structure and expression.

His wife, now aged 45, was arrested in Illinois for murder, only last month. An investigation has "determined" that she killed Scott and disposed of his body. Of course, the evidence is not yet out as to why that determination was reached.

There's more background information here:

Nothing gives an indication of Scott's build, any scars or distinguishing features.

Mother in Alaska cold case murder thankful for resolution

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The mother of a man murdered in Sitka almost 23 years ago says she's thankful to the determined cold case detectives who caught her son's killer and for bringing the family closure after two decades of mystery surrounding his disappearance.

(Snipped)

Now that Scott's wife, Jane Reth, has confessed to the murder, Reta can stop worrying about what happened to her son.

"In one aspect, it's less painful to have the knowledge that they didn't cease loving you," she said.

Reth, 45, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Sitka Superior Court on Nov. 22. Reth entered the plea by telephone from Lemon Creek Correctional Center, where she's been since troopers extradited her from Oswego, Ill.

From March 2011:

Assistant District Attorney Jean Seaton, representing the state, sought a 70-year sentence for Reth, highlighting in graphic detail how Reth shot Coville in his sleep, then dismembered his body with an ax, putting the pieces into garbage bags, throwing them into the trash and cleaning up afterward...

“It took all night to accomplish her task,” George said. “And when she had cut up the body into small enough pieces to fit into garbage bags, so that she could dispose of that and hopefully have it incinerated, she then set about to clean the house. And she cleaned that room fastidiously.”

That said, George did acknowledge her lack of any other criminal record, and the good deeds she’s done in recent years. His sentence was 55 years, with 19 suspended. That puts Reth behind bars for 36 years, or 24 if she has good behavior.
