LA - Averie Evans, 11, Natchitoches, 5 Nov 1990 *P. DeSelle guilty*
Missing Since: November 5, 1990 from Natchitoches, Louisiana
Classification: Endangered Missing
Date of Birth: December 15, 1978
Age: 11 years old
Height and Weight: 5'0, 101 pounds
Distinguishing Characteristics: Caucasian female. Brown hair, brown eyes. Some accounts spell Evans's name "Avery."
Clothing/Jewelry Description: A black sweater, a blue denim vest and black jeans.
Details of Disappearance
Evans was last seen selling candy door-to-door on November 5, 1990 in Natchitoches, Louisiana. She was attempting to earn money for a school fundraiser at the time. She has never been heard from again.
Phillip DeSelle was one of Evans's neighbors in 1991 and had previously purchased candy from her. He was considered a suspect in her case from early on in the investigation, but the police did not have any evidence against him until January 1991, when DeSeelle sent an anonymous letter to authorities confessing to strangling Evans. The note said he disposed of her body in a trash bin and put her bicycle in Sibley Lake. In his letter, DeSelle apologised for his actions and described some of the clothing and jewelry Evans wore on the day of her disappearance. After it was discovered that he was the letter's author, DeSelle attempted to commit suicide by slashing his wrists, but survived. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder. Evans's bicycle was located where he said it would be, but her remains were not located in spite of an extensive search of the local landfill.
DeSelle pleaded guilty to manslaughter and kidnapping in connection with Evans's case, and was sentenced to 50 years in prison. He will be eligible for parole in 2007. Prosecutors agreed to the plea bargain because, without the child's body, they did not believe they could prove a case of first-degree against DeSelle.
Evans has never been located, but foul play is suspected in her case due to the circumstances involved.

Child killer to be freed after sentence served

We are all one poor choice from being a subject on this forum. Think twice.

DeSelle is 65, according to DOC records.
He was 41 when he was arrested for Averie's murder. Investigators were able to connect him to an anonymous letter mailed from Many that said Averie "is with God."It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it. ~ Aristotle

I just read about this and I am so disgusted. The pictures of Averie on the Facebook page they have set up are heartbreaking. She was a beautiful child.
I admire the strength these families have. The desire to take matters into your own hands has to be overwhelming. I could not stop myself.

The self-confessed child killer who was freed from state prison Thursday will be tracked 24/7 through a GPS device he'll have to wear through the duration of his parole...
Averie's family did not learn until late Thursday that restrictions would be placed on DeSelle, even though his release from David Wade Correctional Center in Homer that morning could not be stopped since he legally served a percentage of the sentence imposed upon him. The state has classified DeSelle as a child predator, and as such he also had to register with the Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Office...
In addition to the GPS monitor, DeSelle has a daily 6 p.m. curfew and he cannot leave Evangeline Parish without permission. He is required to attend sex offender education classes.

"Knowing he is out there, it's a very fearful day," said Erin Keyser, the aunt of Averie Grace Evans...
What happens next is concerning for Averie's family, "We do feel like given the opportunity, he will hurt another child," she said.

This is being talked about in our local communities state wide over here.
From what I gather by reading the majority of commenters on Facebook posts about this man that he will not have an easy life outside of prison.
The vigilantes will harass him pretty bad once he is out and among us.
The coon-asses don't like child killers.
"Boy, you better straighten up before I take out your eyes and look at your brain to see what's wrong with you."

From a penalty/punishment standpoint, I believe the problem started here:
Without her body, the district attorney's office let DeSelle plead to manslaughter and kidnapping. He was sentenced to 40 years and 10 years, respectively. The sentences ran concurrently.
Initially, DeSelle benefitted from Averie Evans' remains not being found. And, now, he is benefitting from "good time" served. IMO DeSelle should not qualify for the time served program because Averie's body has not been found.
My heart goes out to Averie's family.
