TX - Shots fired on Texas Capitol steps
UPDATE 2: Texas Department of Public Safety troopers have arrested one man after a gun was fired on the steps of the State Capitol. DPS confirms that shots were fired at around 12.15 pm today on the south steps of the capitol. The suspect, named as Fausto Cardenas, was approached by troopers: He surrendered without incident and was taken into custody.
The building is now reported to be on lock-down, but DPS media relations could not confirm at this time.
In what may or may not be a related incident, Sen. Dan Patrick, R-Houston, tweeted, "An individual came into my Austin Senate office today acting strangely, staff called security, moments later shots fired on Capitol steps."

Oh, Texas Mist, I'm so glad they got the guy. I don't like to hear of shots fired in downtown Austin. I was visiting my aunt, who was the executive secretary to the president of UT, on August 1, 1966 (her office was in the first floor of the tower). I'll never forget the horror of hearing shots above and around us. She burst out crying (which frightened me all the more) as I'd just walked by myself back from a lunch counter on Guadalupe. We were taken to safety through some sort of underground exit. I was only 11 and it was terrifying. I didn't see a thing as my aunt shielded me and I don't think I was even allowed to watch the news. But, oh those shots were scary. I'm so glad no one was hurt today.
FWIW, when I was just checking the spelling of Charles Whitman's (the UT shooter) name, I noticed that a Glioblastoma brain tumor was found at the time of his autopsy. I'd forgotten all about that. This might be a detail to be considered in the Speight case in Appomattox. Speight's mother died of a brain tumor. I wonder if Speight might also be effected?
We were talking on the Speight thread yesterday about the amount of Speight's planning which could take insanity off the table. Whitman was a master planner though. It's quite coincidental but there's actually several similarities to Speight. Here's a link:

The folks in Sen. Patrick's office - and everybody else @ the Capitol today - are soooo lucky this crazy dude didn't go off on them!!
Capitol staffers with Houston GOP Sen. Dan Patrick said that minutes before the incident, the man followed the senator's legal counsel into their third-floor office and asked to speak to her privately. The attorney told him she would be glad to help him, but he insisted on a private conversation in Patrick's own office. She refused repeatedly, and he finally left, said Logan Spence, Patrick's chief of staff.
The man never said what he wanted, but moments later, he was on the south steps firing a handgun.
"I was in the Rotunda (just inside the door) when we all heard this happening," said Erika Aguilar, a reporter with KUT-FM 90.5, the local NPR station. "It honestly sounded like someone was knocking on the glass door. You heard about five knocks, at least I did. Looked like nobody knew exactly what was going on. There were a few people around there, people on the ground floor. They kind of gasped in confusion, and all of a sudden you heard somebody say, "Shots fired!"
"You see ten troopers, maybe a little less, on top of a guy who was squirming around trying to get out of there. They had him pretty secure though."

It looks like Mr. Cardenas wasn't too cooperative. Karma, I guess. I am so thankful that Senator Patrick and his staff are all OK. This could have ended so so badly.
I see the photo too with no problems.
