This one has me confused. Hanover Park, IL is in the furthest W/NW part of Cook County. If his car was found at Foster Ave Beach, according to mapquest driving directions it is 35.21 miles and 54 min drive from HP to Foster Ave beach. (without rush hour traffic maybe-if you are from this area, you'll understand laughing at mapquest estimated travel times)
What I don't know, is where is his postal route? Was his route anywhere near the Foster Ave Beach. If not, and his route was somewhere near his home than this doesn't sound good.

Praying for his safe return, and some additional info on the case.

January 23, 2010 (HANOVER PARK, Ill.) (WLS) -- The family of a missing suburban U.S. postal worker is asking for the public's help in finding him.

Richard "Rick" Wieting, 53, was last seen on Monday, January 18 in Hanover Park. He was reported missing the next day when he failed to show up for work at the Harwood Heights Post Office.

This sounds reasonable, being local to the story. Harwood Hts would be in route to the Foster Street beach... I wonder if LE has checked the car for any signs someone other than Rick drove it to the beach.

    Prayers for his family.

I should add, parts of Hanover Park are pretty rough. The area has some gang problems. I wonder if Mr. Wieting was having any problems with local gangs? Though, it wouldn't necessarily fit that they would go all the way to the beach if they followed him to Harwood Hts.

Harwood Hts is considered a nice area. I don't know about all the areas west of Harwood Hts where Mr. Wieting may have run into problems travelling east to work.

Sadly, the foster street beach has me a bit concerned. Would he plan on harming himself by going into the lake? Especially if he was to be at work that day.

    praying he is found safely.

Monday the 18th was Martin Luther King day. Was the post office open that day? Were mail carriers working that day?

Hi Cubby - an Illinois friend. Yes, Martin Luther King day is a federal holiday. I know I didn't get mail. It's been so cold here that I can't imagine anyone going to the beach.

    From the ABC7 link:

His wallet, keys and jacket were later found in his car near Foster Avenue beach.

"We believe he has no identification on him. He does take medication for his heart, which is another reason we're very concerned," daughter Marla Wieting said.

Daily Herald doesn't have much new info-
    http://dailyherald.com/story/?id=353379

Wieting is described as 6-foot-2 and about 185 pounds. He was last seen on Monday night at home with his wife of 29 years, Joyce, and their daughter, Michelle, 20, a Harper College student. The father is on heart and cholesterol prescriptions, which remain at home. So the family is concerned for his health and welfare since he also hasn't had his medications since he was reported missing, said Marla Wieting.
There were no indications of any problems with her father in prior days and no known threats that would have alerted them to his sudden disappearance. He was in good health and happy, the eldest daughter added.

Lake Michigan rarely covers with ice - I honestly don't know about the beach conditions at Foster St. Beach. Not sure I've ever been there.

Wieting’s black 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser was found parked near Foster Avenue Beach at Foster and Simonds Road this week. He was last seen by his family Monday night.

    Wonder if he was depressed?

The 53-year-old Wieting remains missing, although his 2007 black PT Cruiser was found by Chicago police near Foster Avenue and Simonds Road, near Foster Avenue Beach, in Chicago.
About 30 family members and friends held a news conference at Foster Avenue Beach on Saturday to plea for information involving Wieting's disappearance and to seek volunteers to pass out fliers and search the area. They will meet again Sunday around noon to do the same, said his daughter Marla Wieting, 26, of Schaumburg.

This is scary, since his ID and keys were in the car. There is something that juts out into the lake from the parking lot area. Maybe something he could walk on? Jump in/fall in?

I don't know about the beach conditions either. It's been forever since I've been that way, and don't recall going to that beach.

Foster Ave runs east and West, and is one block, or one major street just north of the post office location. The intersections are very close. It would appear that rather than going to the post office he, or whomever was driving continued straight east to the lake.

His keys, jacket, and wallet left at the car concern me.

Google zoom of the area shows both a sandy beach area and stone retaining walls. Also what looks like a longer retainer wall which extends well out into the lake.

ETA: To answer your question, yes, it looks like it is something he could have walked out on. Though, I don't know how icy the retaining wall/stones get. I've never been along the lake front during winter.

Also, whenever someone falls into the lake, they are usually found pretty quickly as I recall. It happens a few times a year, someone falls in while walking or jogging near the lake. I don't know that if he fell in, he would not have already been found. Plus there is usually some activity along the lake front during all seasons...... I don't know how popular of an area this might be. Reviews for Foster beach read less crowded than North Ave. or Oak Street beaches which are pretty popular and more crowded.

Maybe staged to look like an accident and he walked away?

Chime in City folks! I am too far out in the burbs to know the lake/downtown stuff too well.
