    Thornton expected to enter plea

Thanks, Rizzy, for posting this in the media thread!

Frederick Thornton Jr., 19, one of seven people charged with first-degree murder in the death of Byrd and Melanie Billings, is expected to enter a plea Thursday morning in circuit court.

State Attorney Bill Eddins announced Wednesday that Circuit Judge Nick Geeker had scheduled a 9:30 a.m. hearing Thursday with Thornton. Eddins declined to make specific comments on the case, but said Thornton may enter a plea during the hearing.

I wonder how many others may go for a plea deal...

    Travis Griggs tgriggs@pnj.com January 28, 2010

One of seven people charged with first-degree murder and robbery in the death of Byrd and Melanie Billings pleaded guilty this morning to second-degree murder.

Frederick Thornton Jr., 19, entered the plea before Circuit Judge Nick Geeker. He faces life in prison when he is sentenced.

By pleading guilty to second-degree murder, prosecutors agreed not to pursue the death penalty.

As I reported yesterday, Frederick Thornton, Jr., age 19, has agreed to testify against Patrick Gonzalez and the others involved in the murders of Byrd and Melanie Billings.

Wearing a bright fluorescent green jumpsuit with “Esc. Co. Jail” stamped on the back, the slight Thornton stood this morning with his attorney Cheryl Alverson in front of Judge Nickolas Geeker. In exchange for his willingness to testify against Gonzalez and the others, Thornton’s charges were lowered to second degree murder and he will no longer face the death penalty. However, he still may be sentenced with life in prison.

Does anyone else think that Thornton would have gotten life anyway, not the death penalty, due to his age?

I know that if you are involved in a felony and a murder take place you can be charged with murder. I am also a very strong proponent of the death penalty.
In this case this young guy was sucked into what was supposed to be a robbery, but was a planned murder. I can see him getting 5 to 10 and have a chance at having some kind of life. The guy that planned the murder and pulled the trigger should get the death penalty.

I do agree that it is sad for such a young guy to be facing this. But whenever you go into a robbery fully armed like they did, you have to know that someone COULD/MAY get killed. 5-10 years would be way too little.
(We have a Pensacola guy that is serving 10 years for not paying proper social security tax for his emplyees!)

That is interesting. I wonder of what country is he a citizen? I couldn't find him on the Escambia County Clerk's site either.

I hope he has enough to hang a few of the people out there like HW, PLW, CT, and others involved.

BTW... the only family member (child of BB and MB) that knew this was happening was AM. Not saying they would disagree but pnj should have stated the intent correctly. The only way that the other adult children knew was because a family friend called after seeing it on the news.

So today he went before the judge asking to be moved. Apparently he feels his life is in danger. It is a shame that he would have to be completely moved to aviod the rath of his "friends." I hope he holds to his postion of laying out the events as promised. It is to late to go backwards now. I hope he is protected so the truth can come out.

Man who took plea in Billings case moved to Santa Rosa jail

A suspect who has agreed to testify against his alleged accomplices in a high profile homicide case has been moved from Escambia County Jail to Santa Rosa County Jail for safety reasons.

I believe this is the same article as post #5 that Rick wrote on 1-28-10. Seems that if you pull an article from Rick's archives, today's date still appears at the top.
