    LE Statements

I think it might be useful to have all the LE statements in one place, so we may actually point to it?

As JBean suggests, let’s try to only include direct quotations from LE officials involved, and avoid reporters’ paraphrasing of LE statements?
I thought I'd start it off with the reports of LE statements from this article dated January 29, 2010

    http://www.abc15.com/content/news/so...ZWBC0ifjg.cspx

    Snips:

"The tips are not coming in at the volume they were a week ago," said Tempe Lt. Mike Horn.

"It is a very real possibility that Elizabeth killed Gabriel," Horn said. "We are holding out hope that he's alive, but we have to look at every aspect and investigate everything."

"There's one thing we've learned in this investigation and that is that anything is possible," said Carbajal

Does anyone agree? I have never done this before, so let me know if I am off track-- TIA
I think it's a great idea, especially if we record quotes from named LE officers, rather than what the media says LE says. (The two often differ in this case.)

FBI questions Texas group in missing kid case
    January 13, 2010
    Snippets

“It’s a long shot, but we’re questioning people there to see if there is a connection,” said Kim Hale, commander of investigations for the Tempe Police Department. “Our focus continues to be in San Antonio where the child was last seen."

Hale said Wednesday that investigators are trying to determine whether Johnson, 23, gave the child away in San Antonio as she told the FBI, or killed the baby. Johnson told McQueary, her estranged boyfriend, by phone and text message on Dec. 27 that she killed the baby and put his body in a dumpster in a diaper bag, according to a Maricopa County Superior Court document.

Hale said there was a certain amount of planning that Johnson did before she left Arizona with the baby on Dec. 18, and investigators believe she had some kind of help.

“We know originally, she sold a couple of dogs, she had a roommate that gave her about $400, and she had some social services assistance,” Hale said. “When you start adding up all that, we estimated she had about $1,200 when she left. By the time you start calculating the drive, gas, motel stays and shopping in Miami, and her having about $500 cash on her at the time of her arrest, the numbers don’t add up. Somewhere along the way, she came into some extra funds.”

Hale said Wednesday that investigators also have a GPS tracking device that was recovered from the 1995 white Delta 88 Oldsmobile she abandoned in San Antonio on Dec. 27 before boarding a bus to Miami.

San Antonio Police Talk About Baby Gabriel
    http://www.kpho.com/news/22382259/detail.html
    January 29, 2010

San Antonio police heading up the missing person’s case of Valley baby Gabriel Johnson said it will be early next week when they announce how they will move forward.

“We're not prepared to talk about that (the case) right now. Next week we will be. But right now we're in meetings to determine how we're going to proceed with this,” said Chief William McManus of the San Antonio Police Department

Investigators are considering a search of San Antonio landfill. Managers of the Tessman Road landfill have cordoned off an area they refer to as “of interest to police.” But when and if a search begins in not yet known.

“I'm not going to comment on that right now because the plans are not completed,” said McManus.

Law enforcement officials in San Antonio have been extremely tight-lipped about the case. The FBI has been involved from the start in assisting the investigation that for the time being remains a missing person’s case. “We have not opened a homicide case we are still considering it as a missing person case,” said McManus.

    Thanks!
In one article Valley article (yesterday?) Sandy seems to contradict McManus. I'm sort of wondering if the landfill search has to do with looking for other things than a body. Hope that makes sense.

Tempe police Sgt. Steve Carbajal said Johnson left Arizona with her son Gabriel December 18.

"Everybody knew where she was and that was OK," Carbajal said. "She just wanted to get away for a while and then these series of events happened where it was a concern for the father that she would not show up for a hearing. His fears were confirmed."

Tip Had FBI Searching Nashville Home
Agents Acted On Evidence After Elizabeth Johnson's Arrest In Miami
    Pat McReynolds

    POSTED: 8:52 pm MST January 8, 2010
    UPDATED: 6:27 am MST January 9, 2010
    http://www.kpho.com/news/22190418/detail.html

Exactly what evidence Elizabeth Johnson offered that led authorities to Nashville is still unclear. But it was enough to have FBI agents rush to a house in Nashville, a city to which her friends say Elizabeth has never been.

"We went, knocked on the door, and interviewed the occupants and have been unable at this point to locate the child," said FBI Special Agent Keith Moss.

"As leads develop to the area, Tammi Smith is one individual who formerly resided in Nashville. As leads are developed by the Phoenix field offices, the Miami field offices, we're following up on those," said Special Agent Moss.

"Cxxx Cxxxx did not know Elizabeth, he is not the father of the child according to Cxxxx. And as a matter of fact Cxxx revealed to us that he is a blood relative of Tammy Smith," said Kim Hale of the Tempe Police Department.

Tempe Police say it's investigation into the kidnapping of 8-month old Gabriel Johnson is winding down. Tips are not coming in nearly as fast and the primary investigation has shifted to San Antonio, Texas, "We are doing what we can but we can only do what we can with information we receive", said Sgt. Steve Carbajal.

Police still consider Jack and Tammi Smith "persons of interest" but have not been able to link them with enough evidence to arrest them.

"Signs that Gabriel is alive are dwindling, that's why we need more tips to come in," said Tempe Sergeant Steve Carbajal.

"The tips are not coming in at the volume they were a week ago," said Tempe Lt. Mike Horn.

“The chief confirmed and conveyed that an excavation and search will move forward at the Tessman Road Landfill, and more information on how that search and how that process will be conducted will all unfold next week,” Gutierrez said.

“We have been at the landfill on and off for about a week,” Gutierrez said.

Video includes brief interview with LE - McManus

"If we had reason to believe that the baby was dead, then we would open up a homicide case," Chief McManus told News 4 WOAI. "But right now, that's not the case, and the Baby Gabriel case remains a missing person case.

Leila asked if that meant there are indications Gabriel is still alive.

"We are hoping that he is still alive," responded McManus.

"We have been in the planning stages as to what our next move is going to be," explained Chief McManus. "And we're nearly through with those discussions, and we'll be ready to move on that decision within the next few days."

"The landfill is the place of interest for us right now," Chief McManus told News 4 WOAI. "And again, we are in the planning stages, the discussion stages of what we might also do out at the landfill."

“The information is coming in much slower, and the indicators that were once there are getting less and less to the point of becoming nonexistent,” Tempe police Sgt. Steve Carbajal told the Associated Press. “At this point, we're looking seriously into the possibility that (Elizabeth Johnson) killed Gabriel like she said she did.”

“We're always looking for helpful information we can utilize in the course of an investigation,” Gutierrez said. “We welcome it.”

I wonder why LE presented the situation that way. We know from what's come out since then, that that was not the case.

I suppose the reason could be one or more of the following:
    - Carbajal was not appropriately briefed on the case prior to making the statement, and misspoke.
    - Tempe PD was concerned about inadequate actions it had taken to protect Gabe, despite Logan's warnings and cries for help, for example, the Tempe detective leaving Gabe with the Smiths on Dec 10.
    - It was a deliberate misstatement with the intention of protecting Gabe or the investigation, for example, to lead the Smiths to believe that LE was unaware of their attempts to illegally sever Logan's parental rights.
