Starkville police are seeking information on the whereabouts of a missing Mississippi State graduate student who has not had any contact with his family for more than two weeks.

Lester R. Jones Jr., 26, was last seen in person by his brother early in the morning of Jan. 11 at his family’s home in Tupelo, where he had stopped briefly en route back to Starkville from Tunica, said Police Department Detective Landon Stamps on Monday.

That night, he was due to meet some fraternity brothers and other friends in Jackson, but never arrived, though a security camera at a Sprint Mart store in Flowood captured his image at 10:18 p.m., Stamps said. No one has seen or heard from Jones since then, Stamps said. Jones did speak with his friends by phone that evening.

His cellular phone was left at the convenience store, was found by another customer and turned in to the store staff. His family retrieved the phone a week ago and found that Jones’ father, who lives in California, had left him a voice mail message, Stamps said.

His father, however, has not spoken with Jones, nor has Jones’ girlfriend nor his roommate at the home the share on Collegeview Street, Stamps said.
“We have no reason to suspect that there is any foul play involved at this time,” said Stamps. “We just have no information on his whereabouts since he was seen at the convenience store in Flowood. He’s not in any trouble; we and his family just want to know he’s okay.”

Jones is a graduate student at Mississippi State University who is enrolled in a single course for the spring semester, Stamps said. He has not been to class since Jan. 11, Stamps added.

Jones recently purchased a blue 2002 Ford Expedition sport utility vehicle, but it has not been seen since Jan. 11, Stamps said. The Expedition may have the license tag “KTW 714,” Stamps said.

Anyone who has made contact with Jones or seen him or his vehicle is encouraged to call Stamps at the Police Department at 323-4131 or any other law enforcement agency.

Wow! I just now read about this case, and I'm from that area. It sounds like folks think that he may have disappeared willingly. If he ran away from the stress of school or family or something, I'm surprised that he hasn't been located yet.

:bump: for LJ . . . I rewatched the episode of 'Find Our Missing' today that his case was featured on. Where is LJ? :(

Snipped:

Lester Jones was a biomedical engineering medical student at Mississippi State University. While only four months away from obtaining his masters he took a trip during to Jackson, MS to support his friend, whose girlfriend was stabbed to death in a violent robbery.

I'm seeing this for the first time. I am local. Why, oh why do I not already know about this? Our news media is usually pretty good about publicizing missing persons.

I'm confused about some details though. In one article it states his family was in Tupelo and another says he was from Flowood, the area he was last seen in (Sprintmart). Which is it? Tupelo is quite a ways from Flowood, just under a three hour drive.

The reason Lester was going to Jackson....

TVone.tv...video shows Lester at station

The video is a mite confusing re frat friends....the person in video/one that called Lester's mother is not frat friend T to whose home Lester was headed.

One line of thought...

If Lester was heading to Ridgeland via Old Brandon Rd>> car went off road into water.

Old Brandon Rd> Jackson

Another line...Lester's mother appears to express her thoughts in her radio blog discussion with Angela Bulter.

Lester resided in Starkville, MS....per his family he had visited his family in Tupelo the morning of Jan 11th. It is not clear if he spent the day in Tupelo as next information that is public re his whereabouts is the 10+PM video of his being at gas station/Mart in Flowood. It did not appear that he got gas...used the bathroom only. Not sure how much gas such a big vehicle uses but would think...if Tupelo is a near 3 hour drive...such a big car would have needed gas??

Tupelo and Flowood are about 200 miles apart. My husband says that if he had a full tank when he left Tupelo that it's possible he did not need gas.

I haven't been able to watch the videos. I'm going to see if they'll load faster tomorrow. I'm familiar with the road in the google map you linked. The water in the pic is the backwater of the Pearl River. Have there been any searches of the water? How tragic it would be if he had accidentally left his phone behind and then had a car accident. What are the odds?

I could find no searches of the water. There were aerial and land searches though I do not know what areas were searched nor how thoroughly they were searched. The first logical thought to my mind was an accident. If he took Old Brandon Rd...suddenly realized he had forgotten his cell phone...and went wide to his right to make a u-turn there looks to be areas on Google maps that show there is potential for a car to go into the water. He may well have been tired, was certainly dealing with a highly emotional situation, and forgetting his cell could have evoked a frustrated...unaware of surroundings ...reaction. He was not reported missing for 9 days....searches took place days after the report...so depending on the water's depth etc...car could have sunk out of sight. Lord knows such accidents are not unheard of re missing persons.

But then I listened to his mother on blogtalk radio. She appears to hold a strong belief that foul play is involved. That is when I delved into the reason Lester was going to Jackson. Right off it is one of those scenarios that takes one aback a bit. A young woman is murdered...3 days later a young man goes missing....a couple days later a man with a prior conviction for manslaughter is arrested for larceny involving goods stolen from the murdered woman's apartment...then arrested for her murder. Co-incidental..?? Does make one take another look at the case

Another aspect that causes pause is Lester's mother saying that the frat brother Lester was to visit claimed in 2 interviews with LE that he did not speak on the phone with Lester the evening Lester disappeared. However Lester's cell records, when obtained, showed that this frat brother and Lester spoke for some 8 minutes that evening...in the 3rd interview with LE he did change his story and acknowledge that he spoke with Lester that evening. This information put a different slant on the case and is what led me to question if the UID had been ruled out for Lester.

Not quite organized here.....remembered that after seeing locations involved on map...did think it was likely he went to his home in Starkville after visiting with family. And then on to Jackson.

I know this route like the back of my hand. We are season ticket holders for MSU sports. I have two current students there, although they were still high schoolers when he went missing. I think it's why this tugs at my heart so.

I found Lester's case on Charley Project not too long ago. I thinks its so sad. I highly doubt he went missing on his own. He seems to be an over achiever. Yes, he could of been stressed out, but sadly I just don't think that's the case.

His frat brothers behavior is worrisome to me, changing his story several times. I wonder what their relationship was like.

I really wish that Lester's case had gotten more media attention.

I'm from Mississippi and I really don't think missing person cases get the devotion, time, and effort they deserve. I hope he is found, I know Jackson is a high crime area. It's in the top ten most dangerous cities in the US, scarey. I know Flowood is much more safer than Jackson, but it is still on the outskirts of this dangerous city.
