Investigators are searching for a 24-year-old man who appears to have disappeared after he put a suicide note in his cousin's Buffalo mailbox, police and relatives said Wednesday.
Matthew Stevens, originally from Amherst and Tonawanda, works as a computer analyst in North Carolina, and relatives said they had no idea he was in the Buffalo area until the note was discovered on Saturday. He left without making contact with relatives here, said Barbara Winkowski, an aunt.
Police found Stevens' car on Glenhaven Drive in Amherst over the weekend, but no sign of Stevens, said Assistant Chief Timothy M. Green. He said Stevens is known to frequent areas along the I-290.
He is described at 5 feet, 11 inches tall with close-cropped brown hair and brown eyes.
Winkowski said relatives discovered Stevens also packed his clothing in crates in his home in North Carolina, destroyed his cell phone and wiped his computer's hard drive clean before leaving there.
State police as well as the Amherst, Tonawanda and other local police departments have been alerted, Green said.
Winkowski said her nephew also sometimes goes by the name of Lucas Steton. Family members are searching for Stevens in Amherst and Tonawanda and are handing out fliers and putting up posters asking for help in locating him.
