Police: Former mother-in-law killed Utah teacher

"A 70-year-old woman shot and killed her former daughter-in-law in the parking lot of the preschool where the young teacher worked, Utah police said Saturday.

Mary Nance Hanson is accused of firing multiple shots into the car of Tetyana Nikitina, 34, as she prepared to leave Friday from the Salt Lake Community Action Program Head Start school.

Police said the suspect called 911 and was waiting at the scene when officers arrived. When asked why she had fired the shots, she told a 911 dispatcher, "I don't know, and that's all I'm going to say."

Nikitina, a single mother of two, was behind the steering wheel when officers arrived. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Thanks for the article, MissIzzy....I'd read about the teacher being shot just after it occurred, but the shooter wasn't ID'd as her MIL.

Guess we now know from where her ex got his 'abuse' gene.

Sad all the way around....Nikitina got herself & kids out of a bad situation - and that still wasn't enough to protect her. :(

WTH? I sure hope that is a misprint by the reporter. Good Lord, up to 15 (not at least) years for first degree murder is an insult. :furious:

From October 2010:

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700075536/Taylorsville-woman-sentenced-for-murder.html?pg=all

A 71-year-old Taylorsville woman who pleaded guilty to gunning down her former daughter-in-law in a preschool parking lot was sentenced to prison Friday...

Himonas sentenced the woman to 15 years to life for the murder of her former daughter-in-law, Tetyana "Tanya" Nikitina, 34...

Hernandez said the custody battle was behind all the violence and said its only impact was harming the children. And though Nikitina's ex-husband now has custody of the children, Hernandez still sees them often.
