A Frankfort homeowner was accused Thursday of using John Street as a john.
On Thursday, city garbage collectors picked up four bags from a house in the 1000 block of John Street that emanated a foul odor and a had certain, tell-tale squashiness, said Frankfort Street Department Superintendent Fred Fladd.
Suspicious of what they might contain, the collectors opened one to find what appeared to be human excrement. All told, Fladd estimated there was from 50 to 60 pounds of it left for collectors to pick up.
City ordinances forbid street department employees to take any waste that should go into sanitary sewers. So they left the bags there and called the Frankfort Police Department.
Major Dan Knapp of the Frankfort Police Department said he came to John Street and tried to talk to the homeowner, but that person was not at home. So Knapp left a ticket for violating a city ordinance. Such a violation carries a fine ranging from $10 to $500.
He said he suspects the excrement came from a recreational vehicle parked behind the home.
Fladd said this is not the first time such waste has been left for garbage collectors to pick up.
And they have learned the hard way the importance of checking for such waste before throwing it into a garbage truck.
About a week ago, collectors unknowingly picked up a bag containing excrement and threw it into a garbage truck. Shortly afterward, the trucks compactor caused the bag to explode, spattering the workers with the waste.
Fladd said this is only one of the many problems street department employees are encountering with what people put in the trash.
