Logan McQueary and a cousin arrived at San Antonio International Airport around 9 p.m. from El Paso, where he met with private investigator Jay J. Armes.

McQueary is expected to meet soon with Police Department officials about the missing person case, Armes said.

Police spokeswoman Sandy Gutierrez said McQueary has been in contact with the department and conveyed his appreciation to detectives “for their effort in trying to find out what happened to the child.”

Police still have not searched for the baby at an East Side landfill, which is an area of interest for the department in connection with the case, Gutierrez said.

Police Chief William McManus announced Saturday that the case of the missing Arizona infant known as Baby Gabriel is now being investigated as a homicide and a kidnapping.

McManus also said the San Antonio Police Department would begin searching an East Side landfill for the body of 8-month-old Gabriel Johnson

Gabriel's father, Logan McQueary of Tempe, arrived in San Antonio last night and planned to meet with the Police Department. McQueary met with local authorities earlier Saturday.

Private investigator Jay J. Armes said McQueary was retracing Johnson's steps. “I don't know why they opened a homicide case,” Armes said. “I am surprised since there is no body.”

UPDATED: Police Classify Baby Gabriel Case As Homicide
Procedural Step Taken To Move Forward With Landfill Search
POSTED: 2:32 pm MST February 6, 2010

During a news briefing on Saturday, police said it doesn't mean they think the 9-month-old boy is dead. They said the classification is a procedural step needed to move forward with a search of a Texas landfill.

A portion of the Tessman Road Landfill has been cordoned off based on where Gabriel was last seen on Dec. 26 in San Antonio.

After Saturday's announcement, McQueary said he was relieved. "I feel a lot more comfortable now with the San Antonio Police Department, the detectives there, they are actually doing a lot more than everybody knows," he said.

San Antonio Police have secured an area surrounding a landfill where they believe Gabriel's body might be. Classifying the baby's disappearance as a homicide will allow police to search for a body, which will begin after the weather improves.

Saturday, McQueary met with Chief McManus. "I think they're doing a lot of work on the case that we didn't know about, and I really appreciate their efforts," says McQueary, although he is "disappointed" about the turn in the case.

San Antonio police: Baby Gabriel case now a homicide

William McManus said his department is gearing up to search an East Side landfill for the body of little Gabriel Johnson.

"There have been numerous lead that we continue to follow up that hopefully could lead us to Baby Gabriel," McManus said. "We're not 100 percent certain that they will pan out. We are going to search that landfill. The question becomes, 'Why are you searching that landfill if this is a missing persons case?' So, all hopes are that we would find the baby alive, but we are going to proceed with the murder investigation."

Today's announcement regarding the homicide investigation came as members of the McQueary family were planning an event to raise money to cover McQueary's travel expenses.

"It is devstating," said Kelli McQueary. "But until we see proof that Gabriel is not with us, we will keep the live search going."

The search of that San Antonio landfill is expected to begin as soon as weather there permits.

Now, investigators in San Antonio have stated that the case is now a homicide investigation and once weather permits, the east side of the Allied Waste landfill that has been garnered off will be searched.

San Antonio Chief of Police William McManus spoke about the change in the case and the upcoming search of the landfill.

“Classifying this as a homicide allows us to search for a dead body. You could ask, ‘How can you search for a dead body if it’s a missing person’s case?’ “

Police now calling case of missing Tempe baby a homicide
2/6/10 - Last Update: 7:47 pm
<snipped>
San Antonio police announced Saturday that they are investigating the case of an Arizona baby missing for more than a month as a kidnapping and homicide, allowing them to search for a dead body.

Police Chief William McManus said officers will search a landfill for the body of 9-month-old Gabriel Johnson once weather permits, adding that he still hopes authorities will find the boy alive.

Peg Mulloy, a spokeswoman for Arizona-based Republic Services Inc., which owns the 1,000-acre landfill that police plan to search, told the San Antonio Express-News that part of it has been blocked off since authorities contacted the waste management company.

McManus said police had been planning "for a long time" to search the site but rainy weather had caused delays.

"Logistics make it hard," he said. "We've been working with contractors, and worrying about toxic runoff associated with landfills. And, the weather hasn't been cooperating. We're expecting more rain in the next couple days."

Baby Gabriel search turns to murder investigation

News 4 WOAI asked Chief McManus whether this turn in the case means police do not think Gabriel will be found alive.

Chief McManus paused before answering, “We are going to search that landfill and the question becomes why are you searching a landfill if it's a missing person case. So all hopes are that we will find the baby alive, but we are going to proceed with a murder investigation."

It’s a change in the case that is not discouraging Gabriel’s father, Logan McQueary. He arrived in San Antonio Friday night to begin his own search for his son.
