I was assuming that the thieves stole the ashes because they were in a valuable container. But the article states that they LEFT the container and TOOK the baby's ashes. What on earth could be their motive? Maybe they know the mother and want to hurt her as much as possible?

I wondered the same thing, but then thought better of it. Sadly, I think the perp was someone who was po'd there was nothing of value - to him or her- and decided to act like a complete arse and either take or dump the ashes. A complete spiteful act based on opening the cross and not finding what they were looking for.
It's amazing the level of cruelty a human exhibits can always get lower and lower...... some people just don't belong here.
