Blue BMW, Robert Brous still missing

    http://www.thedailyherald.com/island...l-missing.html

    Thursday, 11 February 2010 03:04

MARIGOT--French-side prosecutor Jacques Louvier said neither Robert Brous nor the dark blue BMW four-door rental car that he was driving had been located as of Wednesday evening, but detectives from both sides of the island were working on the case.

Robert Brous (42), an American interior designer who was on a short vacation staying at La Samanna Hotel with a female companion, was reported missing on January 22 and has not been heard from since. His family are extremely concerned, particularly as the only credit card he had in his possession at the time of his disappearance has not been used since January 22, according to his sister.

Moreover, his other possessions, including wallet and passport, were left behind in the hotel room.

Louvier said forensic experts had inspected the hotel room on Wednesday for any clues. Brous had had an argument with his female companion, which resulted in the woman leaving the island soon afterwards, according to Louvier. He added that Brous had had a history of substance abuse but was now supposed to be clean. Brous' sister said the two were not boyfriend and girlfriend. She conceded that her brother recently "had not been at his happiest."

I've been to St. Martin and I can understand how someone could go missing there, but I don't understand as easily how a car can go missing there. Although there are some more remote areas of the island, it would seem difficult to hide a car. Other than within a structure or in the ocean there just doesn't seem to be very many places a car can disappear. Also, in general, this island is considered relatively safe. Sure, many islands have your typical crime against tourists, but this disappearance seems strange.

    Jan 24th 2017:

Exactly seven years after his mysterious disappearance, the car of American Robert Brous has been found, after tourists spotted it in the sea near the Walter Plantz Pier on Sunday morning around 9 a.m.

The car, a dark blue BMW381i, is according to the police “possibly” the vehicle Brous rented in 2010.

Chief Inspector Ricardo Henson dismissed media reports that a body had been found in the car.

    Jan 27th 2017:

Family members of missing American Robert Brous arrived on the island this week after a BMW was pulled out of Great Bay on Monday. Human remains were found in the vehicle which seemed to have been underwater for years...

Police have not yet confirmed whether the remains found belong to Brous. They will be transported to the Dutch Forensic Institute for analysing. However, word about the BMW having the same licence plate as the one reported missing seven years ago has given family and police no doubt that the remains might be Brous...

Questions surrounding the case remain a mystery, as investigators have to find out how the BMW got in the middle of the bay and why local water-sports businesses never reported seeing the vehicle...

The remains found in the vehicle on Monday have been sent to the Netherlands and authorities hope to learn the identity as soon as possible. The assumption remains that the remains found were Brous’, but official confirmation cannot be given at this time
