UPDATED: Landfill search underway for Tempe's baby Gabriel
Last Update: 2/09 10:58 pm CST

The landfill search is expected to take several days.

"Search teams will be looking for anything of evidentiary value," said McManus.

McManus said crews will first have to remove 45 feet of debris before getting to the location they've pinpointed as a search area.

"Debris will be thoroughly examined by search teams as well as cadaver dogs," said McManus. "All hopes are that we will find the baby alive, but we are going to proceed with a murder investigation."

Landfill Excavated in Baby Gabriel 'Homicide' Case
Father Joins Desperate Search for Missing Baby

Logan McQueary, the baby's biological father, told The Associated Press he was disappointed the case was being treated as a homicide and launched his own search for the boy.

McQueary spent the weekend talking with authorities and working with volunteers to hand out flyers door to door.

Last week, investigators said they were "less and less optimistic" Johnson was alive, despite the arrest and interrogation of Tammi Smith, a person of interest in the baby's disappearance.

Neither Smith nor Elizabeth Johnson, the boy's biological mother, who was also arrested, have been helpful in providing information about where the baby might be, Tempe, Ariz., police Lt. Mike Horn said last week.

Smith was interviewed by police and gave a statement following her arrest, but the information wasn't likely to help the investigation, Horn said.

Gabriel's biological father has hired a private investigator to help find his son.

Gabriel Johnson's Family Fears Missing Baby Was Sold in Underground Adoption

As Logan McQueary searches Texas for his 9-month-old missing infant son Gabriel Johnson, the father has new worries that his baby boy may have been sold into an underground adoption.

On Sunday, he and his family met with an adoption expert who often consults with the FBI in the world of underground adoptions, and learned some startling connections, according to CBS affiliate KPHO. According to the expert, who asked not to be identified, The Homegate Hotel, where Elizabeth Johnson stayed in San Antonio, is well known in adoption circles.

On Dec. 26, the same day the photos were taken, Johnson and Gabriel were spotted on surveillance footage outside a Six Flags amusement park in San Antonio. The expert told the McQueary family that this too fits the bill of many underground adoption he's seen.

That was also just two days after she posted two comments on her MySpace page stating, "Where there's a will, there's a way" and "Excited to start my new life."

Search for missing Arizona baby continues at land fill

Wednesday will be day two of the search for a missing Arizona baby in a San Antonio landfill. Authorities estimate it will take six days before excavators remove enough debris to get to the location where the baby may be.

"Once we have removed debris and have searched our target area, we will begin the arduous task of shifting through layers in search of possible evidence," said San Antonio Police Chief, William McManus.

San Antonio police comb through landfill for Tempe baby
Feb. 10, 2010 04:08 PM
<snipped>
San Antonio police are likely to race weeks of meticulous digging through mountains of stench and waste in a costly landfill search that experts say may never lead to the body of 9-month-old missing baby Gabriel Johnson.

On Wednesday, police worked through the rain to remove 45 feet of debris, a process that will take another four days before investigators get to the trash they really want: garbage from the motel where the Tempe child was last seen alive. They will follow dates on discarded newspapers to make sure they are looking in the right spot.

On Tuesday, San Antonio police declined to say whether they had new information to suggest that baby Gabriel is in the landfill. The department held a press conference in the morning to announce the dig, though Police Chief William McManus said he remained "hopeful baby Gabriel is still alive." Spokeswoman Sandy Gutierrez said there are "many leads in the case" and one of them led police to the landfill, but wouldn't expand on the investigation.

Searches came up empty
In what may be the only two landfill searches in Valley homicide cases both came up empty despite partial admissions from suspects and forensic evidence found in garbage cans that pointed directly to the landfill. One involved the body of Brad Hanson, an Ahwatukee teen shot to death by a friend who said he disposed of the body in a residential garbage can. The other involved Tempe mom Cookie Jacobson ,whose son told police he found her dead and stuffed her in a garbage can. Neither body was found.

National successes offer hope
Even though their searches were futile, Laska and Magazzeni said they believe finding bodies in landfill is possible with the right amount of luck and precision. "If you can pinpoint where a particular person can be, with assistance of waste management and if they keep good tracking of where things are, with a little bit of luck you can find people," Magazzeni said. "It has happened, but it is very difficult."

Police in Roanoke, Va., found the body of a missing toddler(Aveon Lewis) in a city landfill two weeks ago after also searching a nearby river. The 2-year-old boy had disappeared two weeks earlier and police searched garbage taken from near the family's home. His stepfather is facing charges in the case.

In October, authorities found the body of a 7-year-old girl(Somer Thompson) in a south Georgia landfill where the trash from the girl's Florida hometown ends up. Police still don't have a suspect in her murder.
