VT - Child Porn Investigation Targets Rutland Police Officer
City police officer target of child porn probe
State investigating unnamed Rutland officer's computers for child pornography
A Rutland City police officer is under investigation after evidence of child pornography was found on his work computers...
City officials said Tuesday evening that the officer involved in an ongoing child pornography investigation has been placed on administrative leave - but almost every other answer posed to city officials went unanswered on the day a Rutland District Court judge released a ream of documents containing information about the investigation.
A Rutland District Court judge has decided to release the name of a city police officer involved in a child pornography probe.
However, Judge Thomas Zonay said in his decision issued Wednesday that he will wait until 1 p.m. on Friday to make the officer's name public to give time for a possible appeal to the state's Supreme Court.
On Tuesday, Zonay released more than 30 pages of documents related to a search warrant executed at the police department in September. Those documents described an investigation that started in August after state police discovered more than 150 images of suspected child pornography on a computer issued to the officer.
Additional images, discs, DVDs and VHS tapes of adult pornographic material and suspected child pornography were obtained through execution of a search warrant at the department on Sept. 22, 2009.
Zonay redacted the name and identifying information about the officer after hearing arguments Tuesday from a lawyer representing the officer who was identified in court only as "John Doe."
But after considering the arguments, which weighed heavily on privacy rights and the stigmatizing effects the release of the officer's name would have, Zonay decided Wednesday that exceptional circumstances didn't exist to continue withholding the name.

And in the next town (10 miles away)...
January 19, 2010: The Vermont Police Academy training coordinator who apparently killed himself last week after investigators seized a home computer looking for evidence of child pornography left behind two suicide notes, Maj. Ed Ledo of the Vermont State Police said Monday.

Child porn probe of police in next town is unrelated?
"Cindy Maguire, chief of the Attorney General’s Office’s criminal division, said [...] the Rutland probe was not linked to a child pornography investigation involving a Vermont Police Academy training coordinator who committed suicide last month."
Then there's this:
(R. J. Elrick, a former Rutland County Sheriff, had been supervising the officer who committed suicide a few days later...)
January 14, 2010: Elrick resigns post at Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council (Vermont Police Academy).

Police Academy director's computer was one of several checked
January 19, 2010: "...the criminal investigation [at the Police Academy] centers on evidence McMullen might have used his office computer to access potential child pornography items from an outside source.
"That evidence was uncovered by state Human Resources Department workers responding to the personnel complaint lodged earlier in the month against McMullen and two or three other academy employees, including R.J. Elrick, the academy’s executive director.
"Ledo said the personnel complaint, which allegedly involved the intra-office exchange of sexually inappropriate communications, led the Human Resources workers to examine electronic traffic on four office computers, including ones used by McMullen and Elrick."

Disgusting! LEO are supposed to bust the POS who look at child porn not become the POS who look at kiddy porn. I hope no other LEO who have to investigate child sex crimes secretly get off on it. I doubt thats the case but these two POS and VTs notoriously ridiculous sentences for Sex offenders make me worried.

Holy cr*p. What the he*l? On work computers none the less.
What's the bet this McMullen will blow his brains out before a trial?
Please know I am not saying I hope he does. Honestly I wouldn't wish that on another human, but alot of cops they'll just do it instead of facing the music.
Crazy stuff up there in Vermont, man. We know though it's everyone. Butcher, baker, cops, lawyers, Doctors, the food service men at Disney land. Really sad though when the people who are to serve and protect are hurting children. Dirty cops.

"While I won't comment on either pending investigation, I know of no connection between the two," Treadwell said.

Officer to face criminal charges
A city police sergeant at the center of an eight-month-old investigation will answer to a pair of criminal charges in court today.
State police began investigating David Schauwecker in August after images of possible child pornography were found on a laptop computer he had used.
The charges Schauwecker will answer to in court today emerged from that lengthy investigation but do not relate to child pornography. Instead, Schauwecker, 49, will be arraigned at 1 p.m. today in Rutland District Court on a charge of false report to enforcement authorities and neglect of duty by a public officer.
Asked about the outcome of the child pornography investigation, Attorney General William Sorrell said Tuesday that an affidavit filed with the court would contain information about that investigation but he declined to say whether Schauwecker had been exonerated of possessing child pornography.
