TWENTYNINE PALMS — Human remains that may signal the end to an Arizona missing-person case were found at 11:15 a.m. Friday, Feb. 19, in the desert area of Wheeler north of Brant Crossing in the unincorporated area of Twentynine Palms, the county sheriff’s department reports.
The sheriff’s Morongo Basin Station received the report. Deputies responded and confirmed the remains were human, Arden Wiltshire, sheriff’s department spokeswoman, stated in a press release.
The deputies were unable to determine the cause of death and called in homicide investigators.
Before the Homicide Detail arrived, Wiltshire stated, deputies searched the area and discovered a vehicle about one half-mile west of the remains. The vehicle was listed as belonging to an elderly man with dementia who was reported missing out of Arizona Saturday, Feb. 6. He was last seen Tuesday, Feb. 2.
Saturday, Feb. 20, members of the sheriff’s Morongo Basin Search and Rescue Team searched of the area for more evidence. They found additional human remains, which will help the coroner’s division make a positive identification.
The homicide detail has been in contact with the missing person’s family and advised them of the status of the investigation.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death and confirm the identity of the decedent. The name of the missing person is being withheld until positive identification is made.
