CA - Gunman opens fire at Calif. church, wounds 2 teens

This is so sad. We desperately want teens off the street. They go to church and get shot. Richmond used to be such a scary place but it's improved greatly over the last few years. This is horribly frightening.

"RICHMOND, Calif. – A man wearing a hooded sweatshirt walked into a San Francisco Bay area church and opened fire during a Sunday service, wounding two teenagers, police said.

Two other men — also wearing hooded sweatshirts — were with the gunman when the shooting took place at about 12:30 p.m. in front of about 100 people at New Gethsemane Church in Christ in Richmond, police Sgt. Bisa French said.

A 14-year-old boy was hit in the shoulder and a 19-year-old man was struck in the leg, she said. Both victims, whose name haven't been released, were hospitalized and were expected to survive. There were no other injuries.
The three men fled and no suspects have been arrested, French said."

This story hurts as Richmond has tried so hard over the last decade to turn the bus around. There's so many good people there, so many families. Two of our children were adopted from there.

"Two victims wounded during a brazen shooting inside a Northern California church were cooperating Monday with police in the search for a hooded gunman and two other suspects. The victims and several other witnesses were initially reluctant to aid investigators but have since provided leads, police Sgt. Bisa French said.

"If I knew something, I'd say something, but others can't see an advantage in that," said Frank Robinson, a Richmond native who lives near the church. "If those guys were bold enough to shoot up a church, who's to say they won't come up to your front door and shoot you?"

    and

"On Sunday, as the choir sang, a gunman flanked by two companions in hooded sweat shirts walked into the church, scanned the pews and fired about five shots, hitting a 14-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man among the crowd of more than 100 people."

    and

"We hate that it happened. In a church? It's just not real," Wallace said. "(The suspects) have no regard or respect for life, especially in God's house. ... If you can't seek refuge here, then where can you go?"

Wallace, who has been with the church since 1964, said the congregation will remain steadfast. "We're not scared, we're not fearful, we're not going to run," Wallace said."

RICHMOND, Calif. -- Richmond police Thursday apprehended a juvenile boy in connection with a brazen shooting at a Richmond Church during a morning service Sunday.

The boy is presumably one of three suspects identified Tuesday by Richmond police. The suspects -- all Richmond residents in their late teens or early 20s – have remained at large, and an intense search has been under way.

Further details about the detained boy were not immediately available, but Richmond police planned to make an announcement about the case before noon.

What we are doing is just a drop in the ocean.
But if that drop was not in the ocean,
I think the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.

    Posted: 10:29 am PST February 22, 2010

RICHMOND -- A second suspect has been arrested in the brazen Valentine’s Day shooting of two Richmond teenage brothers as they sat in a church pew during a Sunday worship service, police said Monday.

In case anyone doesn't know where Richmond is, it is situated on the SF Bay between Marin County and Berkeley. It is also adjacent to San Quentin, which BTW, sits on some of the most incredible real estate in the world. The Richmond Bay bridge links Marin County to the East Bay. It's in an absolutely gorgeous location but has always struggled with crime and has not enjoyed the affluence of its neighboring communities. So much work has been done in the last decade to fight crime and to draw in families. I'm so glad this community is pulling together and saying "Enough!!".
