East Orange 3-month-old child is abducted by her father, police say
    By James Queally/The Star-Ledger
    February 16, 2010, 9:51PM

EAST ORANGE -- Police managed to locate a 21-year-old man who allegedly ripped his three-month old child from her grandmotherís arms and abducted her in East Orange this afternoon, but they could not find the missing child when they stopped his vehicle in Winslow Township.

Local police stopped Shamshiddin Abdur-Raheemís red 2002 Dodge Caravan sometime after 8 p.m. tonight in Winslow Township, Camden County, according to East Orange Police Department Sgt. Andrew Dielmo, but saw no sign of his three-month old daughter Zara Malani-Lin Abdur-Raheem.

Police allege Abdur-Raheem abducted the baby girl inside of an apartment on the 200 block of South Harrison Street in East Orange this afternoon after he attacked the childís grandmother, said Dielmo. While he is the biological father, according to Dielmo, Abdur-Raheem does not have custody rights.

The 21-year-old was arguing with the childís grandmother at 4:19 p.m. when police claim he punched the elderly woman, ripped his young daughter from her arms and left the house, Dielmo said. Abdur-Raheem then placed the girl, dressed only in green pajamas, inside his van and drove off.

The Dodge Caravan is registered to Abdur-Raheemís mother and bears the license plate UHN50T. The brown-haired 21-year-old is 6 feet, two inches tall, weighs at least 220 pounds and was seen wearing blue jeans and a black, waist-length coat when he left the apartment, according to Dielmo.

Authorities believe Abdur-Raheem was driving to a family memberís residence in either Galloway Township in Atlantic County or the Sicklerville section of Winslow Township in Camden County tonight, said Dielmo. The 21-year-old was also identified as a resident of both townships, according to Dielmo.

The identities of the childís mother and grandmother were not immediately available. Abdur-Raheem and the childís mother are not married, and it was not clear if they were having relationship problems or had a history of domestic disputes, Dielmo said.

East Orange Police requested an Amber alert notification, which was scheduled to be issued sometime tonight by the State Police. Amber alerts broadcast information about missing children and their alleged captors to radio and television broadcasters and state transportation officials.

The 21-year-old could face assault and abduction charges, said Dielmo.

Baby girl missing after alleged abduction

    http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?se...cal&id=7281454

EAST ORANGE (WABC) -- Sources say the story the father is telling is beyond horrifying, and he says he has done something beyond imagining.

Police said the 21-year-old father allegedly ripped the 3-month old baby girl from her grandmother's arms and abducted her in East Orange on Tuesday afternoon.

It happened shortly after 4:00 p.m. inside an apartment on the 200 block of South Harrison Street.

Hours later, investigators stopped Shamshiddin Abdur-Raheem's red 2002 Dodge Caravan in Winslow Township, Camden County on Tuesday night, but they could not find the child named Zara was not with him.

There is now a very active criminal investigation in Sayreville, New Jersey along the Driscoll Bridge because Abdur-Raheem, according to sources, "made statements about having thrown the child off the bridge." The bridge crosses the Raritan River.

Abdur-Raheem does not have custody rights to the girl, authorities said.

Authorities believe Abdur-Raheem was driving to a family member's residence in South Jersey.

The identities of the child's mother and grandmother were not released.

Abdur-Raheem and the mother are not married, and it was not clear if they were having relationship problems, police said.

Our news came on late tonight because of the Olympics.

The media from the news said they found Abdur-Raheem in a residence in Sicklerville. The home of a relative.

As of the time of that live news they were still searching for the baby. Prayers he left her with someone he knows.

Father says he threw baby off a bridge into the water.

    snips..

21-year-old Atlantic County man who is accused of throwing his 3-month-old daughter from the Garden State Parkway's Driscoll Bridge into the Raritan River Tuesday night apparently had an accomplice drive him off after kidnapping the infant from her grandmother's apartment, a witness said today.

Four hours passed before police found Abdur-Raheem in Winslow Township, Camden County based on a call from a family member saying he was in that area. He has been charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon by East Orange police.
State Police spokesman Sgt. Julian Castellanos said the suspect was in custody in East Orange. Police would continue to search the river today even though they had no independent eyewitness to the baby being thrown into the river.

Police Search NJ River For Missing Infant

New Jersey State Police are searching for a 3-month-old in the Raritan River after her father told them he had thrown his daughter off a bridge.

The search Wednesday is centered around the Garden State Parkway's Driscoll Bridge, which spans the Raritan River between Sayreville and Woodbridge.

Authorities say Shamshiddin Abdur-Raheem ripped the girl from the child's grandmother in East Orange Tuesday and fled with Zara Malani-Lin Abdur-Raheem.

Investigators say near the Driscoll Bridge is the only lead on the whereabouts of Abdur-Raheem.

N.J. baby kidnapping case unlikely to be aided by Parkway bridge cameras

MIDDLESEX COUNTY -- As investigators continue to probe a New Jersey father's claim that he threw his infant daughter from the Garden State Parkway's Driscoll Bridge, transportation officials said cameras focused on the span do not record footage that could be reviewed.

Joe Orlando, spokesman for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, said the cameras provide real-time feeds of traffic, but none of the 150 cameras on the Parkway and Garden State Parkway are equipped to make recordings.

"The thought behind them isn't investigative," Orlando said. "It's for seeing how traffic is flowing."

In a press conference this afternoon, State Police asked anyone who saw something suspicious on the Driscoll Bridge between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to call police at (732) 264-4150.

UPDATE: Authorities still searching for baby thrown off of Driscoll Bridge

"Right now we are still patrolling the waters extensively in hopes of finding something out there," Dow said Wednesday at a new conference in Woodbridge. "We are pursuing what we think are very credible leads."
About 30 minutes ago, they were still searching...

She also said authorities had good reason to believe they should continue to scour the river through late Wednesday afternoon.

“Without revealing how we got the information, we found it very credible that we should hone in on the area of the Driscoll Bridge in Sayreville, and that’s what we’re focused on,” she said.

The missing infant reportedly wore a pink and gray Carter’s onesie and may have been wrapped in a blue sleeping bag.

Authorities asked anyone with information about the baby or the case to call the State Police hotline at 732-441-4500, ext. 7426 or 7427.
    From above article.

(ETA: Poor little mite... the detail about the pink and grey onesie brought tears to my eyes.)

Search teams, including boats, dogs and helicopters, were still scouring the area beneath the Garden State Parkway's Driscoll Bridge in Central New Jersey late Wednesday for any signs of 3-month-old Zara Malani-lin Abdur in what Acting New Jersey Attorney General Paula Dow called; "an example of a horrific case of domestic violence."
