Longtime area resident, retired fisherman last seen Sunday at harbor
RICHCREEK Local law enforcement and family members are searching for an 85-year-old Crescent City man last seen Sunday afternoon with his dog.
The Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for any information on the whereabouts of Keith Gerald Richcreek, who was last seen at Crescent City Harbor.
According to Terry McNamara, Del Norte County Search and Rescue coordinator, Richcreek was last seen early Sunday afternoon driving near Whalers Island.
His granddaughter, Leigha Cochrane, said Richcreek was last seen by her grandmother, Dorothy Richcreek, as his vehicle passed by while she was eating at Beacon Burger restaurant at the harbor. The couple has been married for 60 years.
It was a daily ritual for Richcreek, a retired fisherman, to drive to the harbor with his black labrador, Tripper, who was with him when he was last seen. McNamara said he always returned promptly from his trips to the harbor and it is quite out of character for him to be gone so long.
“He likes to go out there and let (Tipper) run,” his son Keith Wayne Richcreek said.
“It’s the only place he ever goes to,” Cochrane said about the harbor area, adding that Richcreek likes to visit with friends there and take the dog for walks.
His son said that his father retired in 1982 after 35 years as a fisherman in Crescent City.
McNamara said Richcreek is diabetic, does not have his medication with him and might have early symptoms of dementia.
Richcreek is a caucasian male 5 feet and 8 inches tall. He has white hair and is balding.
He was last seen wearing a light green jacket, blue jeans, and a plaid button-up shirt.
Richcreek was last seen driving his 1998 GMC Sonoma pickup truck, which is white with an off-white camper and California license plate number 6CMA588. McNamara said local law enforcement and emergency agencies have been searching for him from “border to border” since Sunday.
The search has covered areas where he was last seen, other areas of the county and beyond, such as backroads, for any sign of Richcreek and his dog. Cochrane said numerous friends and family members have also taken up the search all over the region, from Prairie Creek and Brookings to Medford, Ore.
But with no clear idea where he might be, a search like this is difficult. McNamara said.
“It’s like looking for a feather in the wind,” he said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact 911.
“We just want him safe,” his granddaughter said.
In a Dec. 1, 2007, feature in The Daily Triplicate, Richcreek talked about his career as a fisherman.
Richcreek first started fishing the waters around Crescent City in 1946.
Born and raised in North Dakota, military service brought him west. After the war, he tried fishing in the Bay Area with a cousin, and when the season ended early, he decided to give Crescent City a try and never left.
“I enjoyed fishing, and it was a good living,” he said in the 2007 article.

MYRTLE CREEK — A Douglas County Search and Rescue ground unit located the body of a missing 86-year-old California man Friday afternoon in the 14000 block of South Myrtle Road.
Keith Richcreek, an insulin-dependent diabetic, was last seen in his home town of Crescent City on Sunday. There are no signs of foul play, according to a Douglas County Sheriff's Office press release. Richcreek was found dead at about 2 p.m.
A resident in the 15000 block of South Myrtle Road had alerted officials to Richcreek's abandoned pickup truck Thursday morning.
After determining the 1998 GMC Sonoma, found on a Bureau of Land Management road, belonged to the missing man, a search and rescue operation began. The search involved K-9 units, four-wheel-drive units and other ground units.
