But there is at least one man who has his doubts about that story.
"I'm not really worried about it that much because I don't think Gabriel is there at all," said Logan McQueary, Gabriel's father.
McQueary has already traveled to San Antonio to search for clues that his son is still alive.
He says he discovered several reasons to believe Johnson went to Texas to sell Gabriel, not kill him.
"It's looking like Elizabeth handed him off to somebody, and I don't think Elizabeth did what she said. I think she just said that to hurt me," said McQueary.
McQueary pointed to new evidence that Johnson was arrested with a ruby and diamond ring worth approximately $20,000 in her pocket. He lived with her for two years, but he had never seen it before.

Tammi Smith Pleads Not Guilty in Missing Baby Gabriel Case

A Scottsdale woman implicated in a missing baby case has pleaded not guilty to felony counts of forgery and conspiracy to commit custodial interference.
Maricopa County prosecutors say 37-year-old Tammi Smith entered her pleas Thursday after being indicted earlier this month. She remains free on $15,000 bond.
Police in suburban Tempe arrested Smith on Feb. 2 on suspicion of trying to pressure the father of 9-month-old Gabriel Johnson into signing over his parental rights so she and her husband could adopt the baby.
Elizabeth Johnson remains jailed in Phoenix and has refused to talk to investigators about what happened to her baby.

About 35 San Antonio police officers, detectives and volunteers suited up in white hazardous material outfits and sifted through six-inch layers of garbage for several hours. Alamo Area Search and Rescue assisted, bringing in search dogs.
"We are providing cadaver dogs, handlers and support technicians to help with searching the landfill," said Christy Bormann, with Alamo Area Search and Rescue.
Six cadaver dogs in all were brought in from all over the state of Texas.
"The dogs are trained to know the difference between animal and human remains," Bormann said.
Searchers are looking for the remains of missing baby Gabriel Johnson, or evidence that may help them in the case.
The landfill search will go on every day from 7:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

A Wednesday statement from San Antonio Police Chief William McManus says crews had only to reach a 30-foot depth of an expected 45-foot depth in the Tessman Road Landfill.

McQueary believes Johnson gave the baby away and whoever has him is scared to come forward because of all the media attention.
"They might be afraid that they're going to get in trouble. The truth is they're not. We're not looking for anybody to get in trouble, right now. All we want is for Gabriel to be returned. I want my son back," said McQueary.
McQueary is hoping money may bring someone forward with information about his son's whereabouts.
A fundraiser is set for this weekend to raise money to increase the reward for missing baby Gabriel. This event will run Friday, Feb. 19, through Sunday, Feb. 21, at Mannys Mexican Restaurant. New and upcoming performer Chavo will be performing his new singles, "El Presidente" and "Yo Quero Nada" mixing it up with his smooth beat.

The second phase in the search for 9-month-old Gabriel Johnson started Thursday when 35 officers with the San Antonio Police Department, the U.S. Marshals Service and the FBI began looking through piles of trash for anything of “evidentiary value,” officials said. The officers are also getting help from six cadaver dogs.
Officials anticipate the second phase could take several weeks to complete.
