Police have launched a murder investigation after the discovery of an eight-year-old girl's body in Bundaberg in south-east Queensland.

The girl was reported missing by her father about 5.45am (AEST) after a suspected break-and-enter last night at the family home in Walker Street.

Detective Superintendent Maurice Carless says the girl's body was found in a pipe that ran off a storm drain near the house.

"We're certainly treating it as a murder," he told a media conference at Bundaberg police station.

=============================

UPDATE 5.13pm: THE body of a young girl abducted from a home in the Queensland city of Bundaberg has been found in a nearby drain.

The eight-year-old disappeared from her home on Sunday night or early Monday morning following a break-and-enter.

She was reported missing by her father around 5.44am and her body was found a short time later in a pipe that ran off a storm drain, police said.

Det-Supt Maurice Carless said police were treating the death as a murder.

Asked whether the child's parents had put her to bed last night and woke this morning to discover "this horrendous thing has happened", Det- Supt Carless said: "That seems to be the case".

Det-Supt Carless said the body remained at the scene as scientific and forensic officers examined the area. It had not been formally identified.

How horrific - to go to bed & wake up to find a child missing...and then her body found later in a storm drain :(

Prayers for the family & for LE to be led to the monster that took her.

Another little girl gone way before her time. Poor little thing. I hope LE can find enough evidence to connect it to the killer. These creeps get bolder every day. They think nothing of going right into peoples homes and taking their children.

have to be pretty bold, or stupid, to leave her body right near the house

Police hunt killer of abducted girl

By Petrina Berry, AAP February 22, 2010, 8:26 pm

Police have launched an intense search for the murderer of an eight-year-old girl abducted from her Bundaberg home in southern Queensland.

The girl's parents had put her to bed on Sunday night, only to discover her missing on Monday morning.

Police and sniffer dogs started a search of the neighbourhood after her father reported her disappearance about 5.44am (AEST).

An officer found her body a short time later in a pipe that ran off a storm drain near her home.

Three houses on Walker Street, including the girl's home, remain taped off and the girl's body is believed to have been removed from the scene around 6.30pm (AEST).

An SES tent has been set up where the body was located

more here (but pretty much the same as reported earlier)

I wonder why LE has taped off 3 houses.....because of the storm drain? or maybe the sniffing dogs gave them reason?

I haven't found any word yet from LE saying 'this is an isolated incident'....scary if there's a monster stealing kids from their beds.

Perhaps they have three houses roped off because all three had been broken into during the night.

I've realized since the Jessica Lunsford case that some of these children going missing from their bed, is not necessarily because they were targeted by the perp. In Jessica's case, I think it was a crime of opportunity. The perp already had a record of breaking and entering. He'd molested one or two children on previous crimes, but I don't think that was his intent when he originally entered the home in the middle of the night. But he had the propensity to be a pedophile and he acted on it when he saw Jessica asleep in her room.

You do have those who the child was the intent, ie Danielle VanDam, and my theory on that is because the perp misunderstood her mom when he'd spoken to her earlier in the evening, and THOUGHT the dad was out of town. He was surprised to hear the dad was asleep in his room.

So sad for this family. My thoughts and prayers are with them and for the newest angel as well. :(

Girl's murder sickens Bundaberg

A BUNDABERG couple is still in shock after putting their eight-year-old to bed only to have her battered, pyjama-clad body discovered in a drain.

A massive police hunt is now under way, including a detailed examination of sexual offenders living in and around the suburb, only a few blocks north of the Central Business District.

Neighbours say they heard screaming, dogs barking and a general ruckus on Sunday night coming from near the area where the child's body was found.

Police were called shortly before 6am after the girl's father raised the alarm, with some reports he ran from his house yelling that his child had been kidnapped.

This is very similar to the Kody Kaplon case in Siskiyou County last year. Kody also broke into a house and stole a child, a three year old. There was an Amber Alert and FAC was found, nearly naked and walking alone up in the mountains by a group or miners. It was an outright miracle that she didn't die. She told authorities that she'd been raped and buried alive.

In this case, the father also went yelling from the house as his daughter's scream woke him up. He was lucky enough to see enough of the vehicle to describe it to police and to identify the fact that Kody had been a visitor in the family home. So, kbl, my HM went off too but it could be just as described. We'll see. Here's a link to Kody's story. Still no trial date that I can find. They are asking for a COV.

Police have charged a 20-year-old man over the abduction and murder of eight-year-old Bundaberg girl Trinity Bates.

And just as SICK (from your link, Heaven)

Facebook rage

Police are also examining their legal options after vandals posted pornographic material and offensive comments on a Facebook tribute to Trinity.

Facebook vandals carried out similar attacks on a tribute page for murdered Brisbane schoolboy Elliott Fletcher last week.

Queensland Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson said it was a concerning issue which needed serious consideration.

"Obviously it is an offence to publish offensive pornographic material, as with the Elliott Fletcher case and certainly with this one," he said.

"If we can prosecute anyone, we will. But I think there is a broader debate here about Facebook sites generally and the control and establishment of them and their obvious ability to be hijacked by people who really, quite frankly, have got very sick values."

Beautiful little Trinity didn't deserve the death she got, or for *advertiser censored**holes to disrespect this horror.

RIP, sweet Trinity.

that is totally sickenig.

A FAMILY friend of murdered Bundaberg girl Trinity Bates, who lived only streets away from the eight-year-old, was last night charged over the shocking killing.

Queensland police spent yesterday questioning the 20-year-old man, described by neighbours as "intellectually disabled", as forensic officers combed his family home.

i would be very careful in making assumptions.
there have been way too many cases where the police jumped on a mentally disabled person as a scapegoat in an attempt to avoid panic.

lets wait and see what evidence they have......and no, a confession alone wont do it for me in cases like this.

Thank you kbl, for bringing up that very real possibility. I'm not sure what the local laws are but in the US, an adult who does not have a legal guardian, regardless of IQ, can be questioned as any adult would. People who have DD cannot possibly understand the implications of their words or of their rights.

We have a son (with a 70 IQ) doing time in State Prison because he was given a Coke (something we didn't have at home) and "encouraged" to "man-up" because "everybody does it"--attempt to have sex with a special needs girl in his special ed class who happened to be naked, but two years younger than him. This surely isn't murder, in fact it wasn't even penetration, but he got 10 years and lifetime registry. I've read the police reports and it's shockingly obvious how his special needs were exploited. I don't talk about it often but this case brings it back home. The DD population need some special protections when they are questioned by police IMO.

I'm watching this carefully as I want to make certain that this particular man is totally responsible for this horrific crime. If he is, and he is found competent to stand trial (our son simply pleaded guilty to all charges), he needs to be in a special population section of the prison.

What a lovely little angel.

TWA sweet angel! I can only imagine the anguish of these poor parents.

From August 2012:

http://www.news-mail.com.au/news/a-loner-who-became-a-killer/1492210/

Allyn had been to the Bates family home, but had never been into Trinity's bedroom until the night of February 21, 2010...

This week, he decided to plead guilty just days before the trial was due to start and was sentenced to mandatory life in jail, with no specified parole period...

He said he "knew what he was doing was wrong but he was at a loss as to why he did it." "It just seemed he couldn't control himself as he choked her," the court was told. Allyn denied any sexual motivation and denied drugs or alcohol had impaired his judgment. There were no signs of sexual interference.
