    MA - Eugene Losik, 25, Boston/Lawrence, 20 Feb 2010

This young man is missing from downtown Boston. Last Friday, he and some friends had come into town to celebrate a birthday at a bar, and eventually retired to a nearby hotel. He was captured on hotel surveillance leaving the hotel in the early hours (likely to smoke a cigarette) and hasn't been seen since. While everyone hopes for a happy outcome, I sadly think it is quite likely that he fell in the water (the hotel is on a wharf) and drowned.

Search continues for missing Raytheon engineer
Engineer last seen on Long Wharf hotel tape after birthday party

Hotel workers and police are joining forces today to do all they can to help frantic family members and friends track down missing Raytheon electrical engineer Eugene Losikwho was last seen early Saturday morning outside the Marriott Long Wharf in Boston.

“Our hearts go out to the family. This is an unimaginably stressful situation for them,” said Marriott spokeswoman Lucy Slosser. “We have been working around the clock on that since we became aware of the situation.”

Losik’s family, friends and loved ones have permission to put up posters of Losik, 25, around the hotel. Boston detectives are also expected to receive an e-mail list of guests who stayed at the hotel over the weekend in the hopes someone has further information on Losik’s whereabouts, said girlfriend Caitlin McGovern.

Cops scour wharf for missing student

    Excerpt:

Losik had been drinking while celebrating several friends’ birthdays at Sissy K’s in Faneuil Hall Friday night, cops said. He returned to his hotel room around midnight Saturday to play cards with friends, McGovern said.

Rick Keilty, 24, of Brighton, a friend, said he and Losik stopped at a nearby 7-11 to buy a deck of cards before walking to Faneuil Hall. Hotel surveillance shows Losik and Keilty returning to the Marriott and going up an escalator around 1 a.m. Saturday. Losik - in a gray T-shirt, jeans and black dress shoes - later left through an exit near the hotel’s ballroom at 2:24 a.m.

After going out with friends in Boston Friday night to celebrate a friend's birthday, Gene was last seen leaving the Long Wharf Marriott Hotel at 2:24 Saturday morning. His friend Rick Keilty says he was the last one in the group to have seen him.
"He stayed upstairs, I went downstairs and about 15, 20 minutes later he was seen leaving the hotel by himself," said Keilty.
Police say a maid at the hotel later saw Losik get out of an elevator and a surveillance camera briefly shows him walking away.
Police, including dive teams, searched the area around the hotel on Sunday and could not find any evidence of Losik.

Losik went to Boston Friday night to celebrate a friend's birthday at Sissy K's, a bar in Faneuil Hall. He and his girlfriend left the bar around midnight and returned to the hotel.
Losik then went for a walk with a friend, played cards until around 2 a.m., and then was seen on video footage leaving the rear entrance of the hotel and walking into Christopher Columbus Park about a half-hour later.
McGovern said the dive team was in the water from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. yesterday and that they found no trace of Losik.
Sunday, divers searched primarily underneath the buildings along the waterfront. Yesterday, that search widened to include a larger portion of the harbor.
McGovern said she thinks, based on the tides and the location of nearby floats and other structures, that her boyfriend could easily have walked to safety had he fallen into the harbor near the hotel. However, she doesn't have any other clues as to what may have happened to him.

Sounds like the authorities are working under the assumption that he is dead.
This article also mentions the accidental drowning death of a Navy petty officer (presumably comfortable in/around water!) near this same spot in 2007... interesting in light of the similar death of William Hurley.

We are all hoping and praying that is not the outcome. Because of the water and the distance from the hotel, it has to be explored as a possibility. Eugene did not have a fondness for water so for him to have walked to the waters edge to gaze out is pretty much not the case. It does need explored as it was only 100 feet from the parking lot of the hotel. So far the searches have not produced any evidence that he fell into the water. Keep the prayers and the posters going if you live in the area, please. There are numerous possible scenarios, as with most missing loved ones and right now the most we can do is keep his picture and info out there so that in case anyone may have any information that they can come forward.

Was he fluent in any foreign language or have close family connections in any foreign country? What exact type of work did he do for Raytheon? Was it military-related?

Would rather think that he left the country over something like war objections than that he was yet another possible "Smiley Face" victim.

I was just reading the Case Briefings Thread on the Forensic Astrology Forum & one has been done for him, by request of a poster. It's #369. Be warned, it's not hopeful.

If they do find him in the water, I really hope BPD will consider linking it to William Hurley's case. How often can sober, mentally stable young men in the city end up dead in nearby bodies of water for no apparent reason?
Some people do crossword puzzles or Soduko in their spare time...I look at skeletal reconstructions and work on UID puzzles. I swear I'm not this morbid in person!

Here's a good question. And don't forget Dustin Willis, who was found drowned in 2007 off Long Wharf near the Marriott.

I think it would take a major public outcry for the police to start connecting dots, looking for similarities, and really doing the kind of thorough investigation that is normally not done -- is it alcohol that is the main factor tying all these cases together -- or -- is it possible there are other facets that are being overlooked or never looked at. I wonder how many more young men would have to die before a task force could be established to examine all these cases. That's a lot of young men accidentally falling into rivers and/or disappearing after a night out at a bar/with friends - never to be seen again

I agree. And alcohol might, indeed, be involved, if only to make strong young men vulnerable to whatever is going on here. I could perhaps buy the "falling into the river story" but the likelihood of two of the cell phones found on land, and the third dead or broken and missing along with the body?

Thanks for posting. It's been very difficult on the family and there has been absolutely no news updates so please keep the prayers going. They are a wonderful family and Caitlin is a beautiful and caring young woman who is having a difficult time. Pray for her too.

That HLN story is interesting. It says that he wasn't going out to smoke, as his coat and cigarettes were still in the room.

I received a comment posted under the Issues video from Wednesday evening from the organization working with Gene's family.

Here is what was posted, of which, can be viewed by going to the video and read it there also.

First, thank you to Sierra for posting this video. We are the organization working with the family and I was very lucky...considering hundreds of missing daily with no trace...to have been able to get the family to Jane's show.

We are all so very appreciative that they did the story. We hope someone with information may come forward to bring this loving family their needed answers. It would be wonderful to actually hope Gene is located safely! Please help by reposting. Thank you.

From this morning's Boston news: http://www.thebostonchannel.com/news...55/detail.html

And from an article on Boston.com:

    By Mike Bello, Globe Staff

Boston Police and fire units have recovered a body from Boston Harbor this morning.

Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald said the gender of the victim is not known and the bad weather hampered recovery efforts...."It look like the body had been in the water for awhile."

This is considerably upstream from where Losik disappeared, and I doubt if his body would still be floating after all this time, but he was the first one I thought of.

Correction: not really upstream. Very close, and in a tidal area; a body could be pushed quite a distance in either direction depending on storms and current. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sour...19226&t=h&z=16
