This just happened where I used to live before moving to Northern California. I just don't get it. :banghead:

A dead newborn baby was discovered today in a trash can about to be emptied on a residential street in Redondo Beach, police said.

A trash collector for Consolidated Disposal Service discovered the body about 9:05 a.m. on Irena Avenue near Beryl Street.

That's near where my baby girl (now 24) lives in Venice. I'll take naked on the back of a cold car any day.....alive.

The employee told police the trash can was heavy so he took some garbage off the top and found a naked newborn boy halfway down. Keenan said baby was naked, but it's unclear if an unbilical cord was still attached.

Keenan said that the residential neighborhood is relatively close to heavily traveled Pacific Coast Highway and that it is possible the child's body was dumped by someone passing through the area.

Here's a link to the California Safe Surrender Law Campaign. This one is from San Diego County (south of LA) but I found it the most user-friendly. One would think that the state would adopt a single poster/brochure such as this for simplicity. I do like the tagline:

"no shame, no blame, no names."

I also like this idea:

"The nearest surrender location can be found by calling 211 from any phone in Los Angeles County." But, does everyone know that number? Is it the same nationwide?

Every time I read one of these, I have so many questions. There seems to be holes in the law even though I applaud its very existence.
 
It honestly just makes me wonder how many people just "throw away" their precious baby's and are not found. The garbage man felt the can was too heavy so he took the top off to onload some of the garbage...that doesn't always happen. What a scary thought. This area is South Redondo Beach...quite close to the beach. I used to live in North Redondo Beach which is not as "nice" an area as South RB. However, we all know this happens everywhere.
 
IMO, this is plain dumb. There are differences, county by county. Why? I thought we wanted to make this as simple as possible. Remember, when a distressed person is confused, they often make poor choices. Here's a link to the LA County laws:

"The SSB law requires the baby be taken to a public or private hospital, designated fire station or other safe surrender site. No questions will be asked."

Why does the San Diego County law only allow hospitals and the LA County law only allows hospitals and fire stations?

I guess a distressed parent will have to check and see what county they are in before they drop off their baby. Both of these counties site "under 3 days". NJ, however, covered up to 30 days. Can't we get our act together on something so vital? Here's a link to each state's law:

I want the Safe Haven Laws to be easier to understand, easier to access!!! Please, let's drop the political correctness, the partisanship and get to work saving babies.

I'm telling you guys, every 5th grader should know it by rote, just like "stop, drop, and roll" or "Pull, in case of fire". Those blue hands cradling a baby should be well known and highly obvious to every human being. We know where to put litter, to put recyclables, where the bike lane is, where the handicapped parking space is....why not where to put an unwanted baby?
 
Unfortunately I think the big one is coming to California and we're about ready to fall into the ocean..WHY? Because our babies are dying and judges, lawyers, sex offenders, pedophiles, family members of theses creeps are letting them get away with it! Who could drop a baby into a dark, dirty dumpster and just walk away? They're obviously not afraid of anything or anyone! Is the ground going to have to shake to scare the daylights out of these people and instill the fear of God into them to know there IS a higher power and a day of reckoning will see them and they can't hide for long..OK, I will go back to my corner now and cry in peace! :cry:

i dont know how clearer safe haven laws will stop scum from putting a baby in a damn dumpster or trash can mz iz. they obviously dont have his intrests at heart at all

That is just heart wrenching.
 
Not one of us can possibly know if this person might have used a safer drop off point for the child but I want to make it as easy to use as possible. Go back and look at some of the statistics of the hundreds of infants who were dropped off successfully. Even saving one is worth all the work to iron out the bugs.

Are we certain that this infant was alive when he/she was placed in the trash? My heart goes out to the trash collector. That poor person will never recover from that sight.
 
if the baby was alive when put in the dumpster i say put who put him there in a trash coompactor
 
This is so sad. Poor little angel never had a chance.
 
Thanks for letting us know. So sad in every way. She was a 24 year old woman and not a 16 year old girl. I hope her punishment is harsh. Women like this do not have fan clubs in prison....just the opposite. That poor baby never had a chance thanks to that woman. There are so many hospitals in the surrounding area and she being from Redondo Beach knew that yet she chose to end this baby's life. I don't know if the baby was born alive or dead but right now I'm assuming she was alive and she didn't want the responsibility.
