INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Metro police have arrested the father of a 4-month-old baby in critical condition and on a ventilator at Riley Hospital for Children.

The arrest comes after the Department of Child Services and Metro detectives questioned the infant’s parents.

The father, 21-year-old Elvin Cabrera, told investigators the baby was ill Friday night so he took him to Wishard Hospital.

Doctors transferred the baby to Riley Hospital and called the Department of Child Services. DCS notified police at about 4:00 p.m. Saturday.

Investigators have questioned the parents and talked to doctors. According to police, doctors say the injuries the baby suffered caused severe brain trauma and may be consistent with Shaken Baby Syndrome.

=================================

Investigators arrested 21-year-old Elvin Cabrera for aggravated battery Tuesday night after interviewing him about his injured son.

Police say Cabrera told detectives his son fell off the bed. The family lives in an apartment near 39th and Post Road.

The child's mother called police last Friday after their son became ill. But when officers arrived, his father had already taken him to the hospital. That's where doctors alerted police about the boy's condition.

"The doctors say the child has severe brain trauma. This is a child abuse case," said Lt. Jeff Duhamell, IMPD.

Police say a brain scan showed evidence of the type of injury associated with shaken baby syndrome.

It's sad isn't it -- it just never stops....like I've said before, I don't go looking for these tragic stories as I get them in my news feeds....they just keep coming!! :(

I'll ask about getting a separate sub-forum for crimes against children if y'all think it's a good idea.

im afraid the sub forum would run out of bytes in about a week :(

Elvin Cabrera was sentenced in November 2010 to 8 years for battery...but he served less than 3 years and was released in 06/07/2013

March 2010:

Cabrera's infant son, also named Elvin, is on a ventilator. Doctors took him off the ventilator to see if he could breathe on his own, but police say doctors are not optimistic about the baby's recovery...

"The doctors have basically said that the child has severe brain trauma," said Lt. Jeff Duhamell, IMPD.
