Public Memorial March 27th

Amber’s love of animals big part of service

Amber Dubois loved animals, and her public memorial service a week from today will feature many.

“We’re going to have a menagerie of animals because Amber was such an animal lover,” said her father, Moe Dubois.

Dubois said the trick is going to be making sure the butterflies aren’t eaten by the red-tailed hawk or doves, and that the hawk and doves aren’t eaten by the monkey, black wolf or python.

The hourlong memorial is set for 1 p.m. at Escondido High School’s stadium, Dubois said.

Featured speakers will be Dubois; Amber’s mother, Carrie McGonigle; several of Amber’s friends; and a couple of Amber’s teachers.

“The star of the animal show will be a black wolf named Frankie, which is used for Hollywood movies,” Dubois said. “It’s a beautiful black wolf.”

Amber was infatuated with wolves for years, and her bedroom walls were filled with photographs and paintings of them.

The San Diego Zoo and the Del Mar Fairgrounds are providing most of the animals. Almost everything for the service has been donated, Dubois said.

I will be attending Amber's Memorial. I feel fortunate that I live close by so I can attend. I'll be posting after, either Saturday or Sunday.

Amber’s memorial will pay tribute to Chelsea and to Danielle van Dam and Polly Klaas, two other slain children whose parents offered support to Amber’s parents over the agonizing months. On Saturday, the parents of all four girls will release doves in their honor.

At the memorial, Frankie the TV star wolf will be one of a number of special animal guests. Frankie will be brought from Working Wildlife ranch north of Los Angeles, which is home to more than 100 animals that perform in television and movie productions.

With animals, video and live music, Saturday's public memorial for Amber Dubois is designed to be a bittersweet mix of a celebration of life and a heartbreaking goodbye.
"People will be able to get to know Amber the way her family knows her and her friends know her," Amber's mother Carrie McGonigle said Thursday. "There will be a lot of stories told (about Amber)."

Escondido teen Amber Dubois was laid to rest Friday at a private service in Los Angeles, and the community will celebrate Amber's life at a public memorial on Saturday.

"I want everyone to come here and smile when they leave because I want them to get to know Amber, and when you get to know Amber you're going to get to know the love she had for animals and the love her family had for her," said Sablan.

The stadium will be filled with 1,200 blue carnations, as blue was Amber's favorite color.
