In 2006, DNA evidence linked Marquis Deering to the sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl, but the investigation hit a dead end after the test results were abandoned and left to mold in an unplugged Ford Heights police refrigerator, the Cook County sheriff's office said Friday.
Deering, 27, finally was charged in the sexual assault case this week -- just days before he was set to be released from prison for an unrelated conviction -- after sheriff's investigators discovered the test results during a search of the Ford Heights police evidence room last June. On Wednesday, a Cook County judge in Markham ordered Deering held on $100,000 bond in connection with the January 2006 sexual assault.
