BALLSTON -- Human remains were discovered in the town of Ballston on Sunday.

The Saratoga County Sheriff's Office says that remains were found along a bicycle path between Outlet Road and Connolly Road.

The Sheriff's office did not say how long the remains were there or provide any other details.

They are investigating.

That would be a long way to travel on foot, for a 74 year old with dementia.

Also, Saratoga county police say that the remains appear to be over a year old.

It is about a 3 hour drive from where the remains were found.

BALLSTON — Saratoga County coroner John DeMartino said officials will likely have a positive identification this afternoon on the remains found in a wooded area off a Ballston bike path yesterday.

“We’re waiting for a determination on dental work,” he said.

DeMartino said the remains were transported to Albany Medical Center Sunday evening after he was called to the scene around 6:45 p.m.

The remains were discovered by a passerby walking on the trail between Outlet and Connolly Roads Sunday afternoon.

DeMartino confirmed that a weapon was found at the scene but said he could not comment on the cause of death. The skeletal remains had likely been in the woods for “at least a year,” he said. “Nobody really goes in that area.”

A pathologist from Albany Medical Center examined the body yesterday.

The remains were of a single individual whose age and gender were not immediately known. Authorities released no information regarding the individual's identity Monday evening.

The bike path near where the remains were found runs parallel to an Amtrak train line just east of Route 50. A fishing pier and waterfront houses are located about a quarter of a mile down the road at Ballston Lake.

The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Department was on the scene for much of the day Monday. Sheriff James Bowen said the pathologist who performed the examination on the remains is in court on another matter today so the announcement may not be made today.

They have almost identified him but he is the Onondaga Lake body found. I was hoping that the original finding was him yesterday for them to have some closure. But how odd they find his body today. It has been hard for them.

BALLSTON — Officials have not yet released the identity of the human remains which were located in a wooded area off of a Ballston Spa bike path Sunday, but they have identified the victim and were set to notify next of kin late Tuesday night, Saratoga County Coroner John DeMartino said.

He said he expects an announcement from the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Department regarding the identity will be made today.

DeMartino confirmed there was a gun found at the scene and the cause of death was ruled a suicide. The skeletal remains had likely been in the woods for "at least a year," he added.

"Nobody really goes in that area," DeMartino said. The bike path runs parallel to an Amtrak train line just east of Route 50. The remains were found on a stretch between Outlet and Connolly roads. A fishing pier and waterfront houses are located about a quarter of a mile down the road on Ballston Lake.

DeMartino said the remains were transported to Albany Medical Center Sunday evening after he was called to the scene at around 6:45 p.m. A pathologist then examined the remains and used dental records to help with identification at the hospital, he said.

A passerby walking on the trail Sunday afternoon made the discovery.

Investigators from the Sheriff’s Department were on the scene for much of the day Monday.
