Don't suppose there would be any way to find out if he did work for BC/BS. It is sort of mysterious how he supported himself. Do you suppose he did sell some of his nude pictures to sleazy "girly" magazines? If some of these girls were really nude models who did not become victims I'm sure they wouldn't want to come forward now and admit it.

    According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rodney_Alcala

He is a graduate of the UCLA School of Fine Arts, has attended New York University under the alias "John Berger", and has studied film under Roman Polanski. He is also a published "true crime" author (You, the Jury, 1994) and a former US Army clerk. In 1977 he was hired as a typesetter to aid the Los Angeles Times in their coverage of the Hillside Strangler murders, much to the consternation of local authorities. A Los Angeles prosecuting attorney has been quoted as stating '"They hired him, with his name, having kidnapped and raped an 8-year-old ...

So is Wikipedia incorrect about him studying under Polanski?

The information and dates I got for Polanksi also came from Wikipedia. You have to take Wikipedia information with a grain of salt since they are written and submitted by ordinary people.

Supposing the Polanski stuff isn't true, what else in the timeline might be made up?

I suspect there might be more exaggerations, lies of omission and half-truths than outright lies? Things like saying he was doing a job for years rather than months. The Polanski stuff might be an exaggeration too, maybe Polanski gave a lecture or two while Alcala was studying, and Alcala is representing it as something more?

That would be consistent with a lot of what we know about the patterns of his previous behavior versus how he represents it. He's a half arsed photographer but represents himself as better. He wants to photograph beautiful girls in extreme distress, he tells them he just wants to photograph them because they are beautiful. He would prefer not to remember certain things in court, so he finds himself having difficulty remembering them and thus pleads not guilty.

Investigators believe that before Alcala committed these murders, he lived in Georges Mills between 1969 and 1971, according to Senior Assistant Attorney General Will Delker. While in the small town on Lake Sunapee, he was known as John Berger. Alcala was arrested in New Hampshire on charges from another state, Delker said, but as far as he knows, Alcala had never been charged with a crime in New Hampshire.

    Sources used in compiling Timeline

To the best of my knowledge the dates are accurate. I have seen two different dates for the October, 1974 arrest (13th and 16th), but most of the other dates have been consistently reported in more than one source. As far as studying with Polanski is concerned, he may have simply attended a talk and that might have been the sum total of it. Who knows?

Besides the Wikipedia article on Alcala, these are the sources I used in compiling the timeline:

Wonder if one could call UCLA to verify his years of attendance. Or BC/BS to verify dates of employment. I used to be able to do that, but it's been a long time to still have access to records.

Robin Samsoe disappeared near the Huntington Beach Pier on June 20, 1979, while on the way to ballet class on a friend's bicycle.

Her badly mutilated body was found in the Angeles National Forest 12 days later. Investigators could not determine whether the girl had been sexually assaulted or the cause of death because of the condition of her body, which had been attacked by animals.

Alcala -- who straightened and cut his hair after the girl was killed and moved to Seattle, where he was eventually arrested -- was convicted in 1980 of murdering the child and sent to death row.

I thought he was arrested in Monterey Park at his mother's but this is the second time I've seen this statement. But anyway, in looking at potential suspects in any of the other unsolved crimes, it should be noted he cut his hair.

I think the article saying he was arrested in Seattle is incorrect. The following excerpt is from an appellate court opinion dealing with Alcala's case:

    http://www.courtinfo.ca.gov/opinions...ve/S150806.PDF

(This excerpt is on Page 5 of a 32-page document.)

    Excerpt:
When petitioner visited his girlfriend, Elizabeth Kelleher, in Long Beach on June 22, his hair was long and curly. On June 23, the composite sketch was distributed throughout the area; on that same day, petitioner straightened his hair with the aid of a chemical product. On June 26, he cut his hair.
On July 8, he told Kelleher he had decided to leave Southern California for Dallas, Texas, where he planned to establish a photography business. Kelleher accompanied defendant to the Monterey Park residence he shared with his mother to help him pack for the trip.

On July 11, defendant rented a storage locker in Seattle, Washington. When he returned to California three days later, he did not mention to anyone that he had been to Seattle, and instead told Kelleher he had been to Dallas. On July 23, defendant told Kelleher he would leave for Dallas on the following day — and he told another acquaintance he would leave for Chicago. (Alcala II, supra, 4 Cal.4th at p. 760.)

Petitioner was arrested on July 24, however, and a search warrant was served on the home he shared with his mother. The police impounded a Datsun F10 parked at the residence and registered to petitioner, inside of which the officers found camera equipment and a briefcase containing a set of keys. Inside the home, officers seized sets of Kane Kut kitchen knives and observed a receipt for a storage locker located in Seattle, Washington. One of the officers copied the information on the receipt but did not seize
it. Officers returned the next day to retrieve the receipt, but it was gone.3(Alcala II, supra, 4 Cal.4th at pp. 756-761.)
