    Canada - Nicolas Pineault, 4, Quebec, 31 March 2010

Quebec toddler vanishes from front yard

A four-year-old boy is missing after his parents lost sight of him in front of their family home on Wednesday afternoon.

Nicolas Pineault was playing outside when he disappeared. Fearing the toddler could have ended up in the Nicolet River, the parents quickly called police.

    [snip]

Quebec provincial police quickly dispatched officers to the scene, as well as a police dog, a helicopter and a zodiac boat. Police also set up a command centre and the search for the missing boy continued into the night on Wednesday. According to residents of the area, the helicopter continued to pass over the area until 11 p.m.

    Rescuers search for Quebec boy

Police and volunteers spent the night looking for a missing boy who disappeared in a small town near Victoriaville, in central Quebec.

Nicolas, who is four and a half, was playing in his yard on Wednesday afternoon when he somehow slipped away.

Searchers are concerned because his home in Sainte-Clotilde-de-Horton is very close to the Nicolet River, which is swollen.

I think this is the "island" area that the family lives on, based on the description of the island and the Lemire Road reference. Haven't seen an address yet, though. Hoping that Nicholas is found safe.

This more recent article, in French (ran through Google's translator), says they are searching the river with divers, as they fear that's where he may be. But they are also searching the village in case something else happened to him.

    http://www.cyberpresse.ca/la-tribune...t-en-scene.php

The house at 1384 Highway Lemire is actually on a small island served by a bridge. There are fewer than a dozen houses. The search then ran to a wooded area on the opposite side of the road and into the Nicolet River, an option that makes us fear the worst.

Nicholas was last seen at "approximately 3:00 pm". http://www.montrealgazette.com/news/...597/story.html

Haven't seen a reported missing time, only that after they failed to "quickly" locate him, they called.

Also have not seen a date of birth.

I never understood how children get into rivers.. I cannot imagine my 4 year old wanting to play near a rushing river. But maybe? I guess it depends on what fascinates them? My son is fascinated with cars and in a matter of seconds can get behind the wheel and pretend to be driving. I do know how easy it is to lose track of a 4 year old. So scary.

I hope they find him safe! What a darling little boy.

Nicolas Pineault was playing by himself in front of his family's home Wednesday afternoon when he disappeared. His parents say they left him alone only for a few moments.

they are considering the possibility that the boy drowned in the river since the family house is less than 20 metres away from the water.

The home is located on a tiny island surrounded by the fast-flowing Nicolet River.

A child this age should never be left alone near the water..

Search for missing boy focused on nearby river

Volunteers and police officers scoured the brush near his home throughout the night, and did their best to examine the nearby Nicolet River in the dark.

A helicopter flew over the area, and tracking dogs were also called upon to search for the child.
Nicolas lives on a small island called Ile Lemieux, and his home is just 50 metres from the bank of the Nicolet River.

    Army called in

Police have been joined by 30 soldiers, who were on an exercise in the area.
