SALT LAKE CITY -- Unified police are trying to identify the remains of a man found in the Olympus Cove area.

People looking for shed antlers discovered a human skull last month just north of Millcreek Canyon.

Unified Police Department detectives and investigators from the State Medical Examiner's Office and the State Division of History-Antiquities Section returned to the site and found several more bones.

They believe the remains are of a white male between 17 and 22 years old. Detectives are comparing the remains to missing persons cases on file. Dental records may aid in the identification of this individual.

Police say the remains may have been there more than 10 years.

Charley Project lists six Caucasian (or partial Caucasian) males, aged 17 to 22 missing from Utah in the last 20 years.

Police say the recent discovery of human bones in Olympus Cove has renewed several missing person mysteries. Salt Lake City detectives say one cold case from 1985 features two men, ages 14 and 21 who at the time were never seen from after they went out for a hike. Lloyd Reese was just a few days from turning 15. Dave Jaramillo was 21. On June 3, 1985, the two friends left, what they said were only going to be for a few hours. Now, Unified Police recently found human remains in Olympic Cove, this case was brought to life.

UID is in Namus, with the date going back to when the cranium was discovered in March.

only descriptors are white male, 17-22, estimated to be 5'7" and dead for "years". they did eventually get mtDNA and is in Codis.

I'm no anthropologist but those bones do look like they have been there for years.

Cook County Sheriff’s detectives, while seeking to identify victims of serial killer John Wayne Gacy, have discovered that a Peoria man who disappeared in 1978 apparently died on a mountainside in Utah — and was not a Gacy victim, as feared by his family.

Daniel Noe, 21, who was hitchhiking back to Illinois, doesn’t appear to have been a victim of foul play, Sheriff Tom Dart announced Thursday.

The factory worker and surveyor was living over the summer in Bellingham, Wash., and called his dad on Sept. 30, 1978, to say he planned to return to Illinois to complete his studies at Northwestern University. He was never seen again.

“I think it’s wonderful they found the body after all these years,” said Noe’s mother, Phyllis Noe. “This is a lot better than him being killed by somebody like Gacy.”

Gacy killed at least 33 people in a spree from 1972 to 1978. He was executed in 1994.

People across the country have contacted Dart’s office with names of missing relatives they believed could have been among the unidentified victims of Gacy.

DNA testing showed that Daniel Raymond Noe was not a match to the Gacy victims, but a larger search revealed a genetic association to an unidentified deceased person in Salt Lake City. Further investigation and testing confirmed that was Noe.

The remains of the onetime factory worker and surveyor were found by hikers in 2010 on a steep side of Mount Olympus, the Cook County Sheriff's Office said Thursday. Family and friends said Noe was an avid hiker and had wanted to return to Illinois to study at Northwestern University. Authorities said there were no signs of foul play.

I'm glad the Noe family has answers and Daniel finally has his name back.

I can't imagine what it must be like for the families of missing males who submitted dna wondering if their family member may have been a Gacy victim. I don't really feel comfortable giving Cook County the credit here, though with DNA advances in the last few years and the notoriety of the Gacy case, I guess the credit goes to that case garnering national attention it takes to get families from all over submitting dna for their missing family member. Sad it appears to take a tragedy such as what happened with Gacy to make that happen. It's bittersweet.

The Cook County Sheriff’s office said Noe left his home in Peoria in 1977 at the age of 21 to work in Washington state, where he lived with a fellow Peoria native. Then, in September 1978, Noe called his father to say he was planning to complete his college education at Northwestern University in Evanston, and would hitchhike back to the Chicago area.

Noe was not heard from or seen again. His family reached out to friends, relatives and Northwestern University to find out if anyone had seen or heard from him, since it was unusual for Noe not to tell them where he was. They reported him missing in December 1978.

His family accepted he was most likely dead, and over the next 30 years they submitted dental records to various police departments when they would learn about an unidentified deceased person.

Further investigation found that Noe’s roommate in Washington had dropped him off on Highway 5 for his trip back to the Chicago area. Highway 5 connects to Interstate 80, which passes Mt. Olympus and continues to Chicago.

In a statement provided by the sheriff’s office, Noe’s family said “The family of Daniel Noe would like to express our sincere gratitude to Sheriff Tom Dart, Detective Jason Moran and the Cook County Sheriff’s Department and the Unified Police Department in Utah for their diligence in locating our loved one after a 34 year absence. Without their help we would not have closure, and Daniel would not be coming home to finally be laid to rest.”

Glad he got his identity and the family finally has closure but I still wonder what happened to him. How did he end up in Utah and why?

Not sure we'll ever get the answers.

well I think the article answers some of that. his roommate dropped him off by Route 5, major north/south interstate that intersects with Route 80. The mountain whre he died is off of Route 80. I take it he got rides for parts of his journey and since he was an avid hiker, he took the opportunity to hike when he saw the beautiful mountains.

my question was (and I may have a partial answer) do we have any way of knowing if he was ever in Namus, etc? I ran his name on this site and it only matched this thread. so I can only conclude that if no one here on WS ever mentioned his name in a missing persons thread or in the threads for UIDs/possible matches, I am assuming he was not in Namus.
 
I think I can answer some of your question webrocket. It is my understanding in order to get the funding for NamUs both the UID and MP have to be entered into NamUs. They do not have to be viewable to the public afaik.

My question was similiar to yours in that I wondered if Daniel was listed in Doenetwork, Charley Project or any of the pre-NamUs MP sites. Or, did his case get re-opened when the Cook County Sheriff had the national presser asking families of missing males that fit Gacy's victims.

My experience here at WS over the years does lead to some questions where MP cases were lost over the years for some of these older cases if family did not stay ontop of LE so to speak. I think back in the 70's in some jurisdictions once a missing minor became of legal age at 18 their MP reports needed to be refiled or they fell out of whatever system was available back then.

And then, the science was so different back then... I wonder how many families may have given up on those older MP cases.

I hope this case, and the recent guilty verdict in the 1957 murder of 7 yr old Maria Ridulph really give back hope to families with unsolved decades old cases.
 
It wasn't unusual for Daniel Noe to hitchhike long distances. But weeks later, when the Noes had not heard from him, they began to worry.

They contacted police in Illinois and Washington. His mother, Phyllis, used his phone bill to track down friends from college, in hopes that one of them knew his whereabouts. They also sought help from the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. In December, relatives filed a missing-person report with the Illinois State Police.

The family did file a MP report with the ISP. How much was done back then is really unknown. The ISP currently only lists 15 missing persons on the state site. It's really hard for me to believe the Illinois State Police only have 15 missing persons cases. http://www.isp.state.il.us/crime/missing.cfm

The article also indicates DNA was collected from Daniel's parents at their home in WA state, so it appears the report was filed with illinois because they believed he had made it back to IL. Or perhaps Illinois was the only state of the two that would take a MP report. IDK, but I think it is clear without the press release from the Cook Cty Sheriff the Noe family would not have known to seek out LE for dna samples and have knowledge of funding through NamUs so most jurisdictions get this testing done at no cost (other than shipping for the samples.)
