Does anyone have any suggestions for good materials for kids of various ages to help them foster empathy and tolerance (key principles for preventing bullying), to help them be courageous and confident when faced by bullying (either against themselves or witnessing others being bullied), or for kids who are prone to bullying others to help them monitor their treatment of others?

I think it would be useful to trade reviews of materials our students or kids have enjoyed to help with this issue. If you could give a link to the item, that would be very useful, as well as suggest what age-range the item is best for.

I'm looking forward to seeing what we can come up with!

Well, for kids in late elementary school, I think Bridge to Terebithia is a pretty good choice for exploring the issue of bullying. Not only does it show how humiliating and painful bullying is, it also teaches children some empathy for the bullies, so I think it's an all-around good book for this topic - plus, as a novel and not a self-help book, it comes off as less preachy and more entertaining.

I HIGHLY recommend this for (probably) kids from adolescence to adults! Jodi Picoult, the author, saw footage of Colombine that wasn't shown to any media, etc. and interviewed a survivor of a school shooting (among many other kids & excellent sources on bullying). I don't have kids, so my age suggestion may be off...I'm sure parents & teachers can judge this better than I.
All of Ms. Picoult's books are brilliant, IMO.
Thx,
G&T'd

I haven't had the experience of reading Nineteen Minutes. I know that people here tried to have it banned from the school libraries and from what I understand other schools have done the same.

"The Shadow Club" by Neil Shusterman
"Breaking Rank" by Kristen D. Randle
"The Only Alien on the Planet" by Kristen D. Randle

I HIGHLY recommend the above three books. They are for young adults but I find them especially important and meaningful enough to have purchased and tattered through several copies, and to have set aside copies for my own daughter to read in a couple of years (shes only 8 now).

The Only Alien on the Planet and the Shadow Club REALLY touch on the severity of the psychological effects of being bullied, especially by family members.

The E channel has a special on bullying Wed night, 4/21...E Investigates Bullying

The special on E channel, E Investigates Bullying, covered Phoebe case as well as others. It is on again at 6pm EST Friday, and 11am Sat, also 3pm Sunday, if anyone wants to catch it, not sure if online anyplace.

"Odd Girl Out - The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls" by Rachel Simmons.

For teenagers, parents, counselors and teachers. It explores the topic from the viewpoint of the victims...and the bullies.

Since the subject here is books about bullying, and one of the posters (GarAndTeed) uses a quote from Andrew Vachss ... you might want to take a look at Vachss' forthcoming project, Heart Transplant. The purpose of the book--a collaboration with artist Frank Caruso--is to recode the cultural software as to the subject of bullying. More info at http://www.vachss.com/av_novels/heart.html
