NE - Charlotte Schilling & son Owen, 11, Plattsmouth, 10 May 2012

FBI involved in search for missing mom, son

Authorities say they're treating the case of a missing Plattsmouth mother and son as a kidnapping for procedural purposes.

According to family members, Charlotte Schilling was last seen picking up her 10-year-old son, Owen, from Wake Robin Elementary School in Bellevue Thursday morning.

Police said Schilling's car was found abandoned a day later at Lake Manawa with her wallet and cellphone still inside.

No clues found in search for mom, son

Officers from two police departments searched Lake Manawa in Council Bluffs and the surrounding recreation area Monday but were unable to find any evidence of a missing Plattsmouth woman or her son.

[snip]

Rathman said officers found the contents of Schilling's purse, including her cellphone, dumped out in the trunk of her car. He said a forensics expert looked over the car and found nothing “out of the ordinary.” The vehicle will receive a more thorough analysis Monday.

The names of the mother and son have been listed with the FBI's National Criminal Information Center, but an Amber Alert had not been issued because police don't believe Charlotte Schilling poses a danger to the boy.

Carl Schilling said it's not surprising his wife's car would be found at Lake Manawa, because he would often meet her there during his lunch hour. She also was known to fish at the lake.

Schilling said the incident is out of character for his wife and he didn't know of anything that was upsetting her. He described his wife as a stay-at-home mother who is extremely protective of her three children.

[video at that link says Charlotte bought the clothes at Kohls and then picked up Owen and that he had on the new clothes in the video from the convenience store near the lake....which I realize now is across the state line in Iowa. (30 - 40 mins drive depending which route you take)]

I have family in eastern NE, so I got the word out as well. Is there a missing poster anyone knows about?

Also, I am pretty sure this is Charlotte's FB. Private, so not much there to see.

Crews Search for Missing Mom and Son
May 14, 2012

snipped...Search dogs combed the grounds of Lake Manawa late into the evening, trying to pick up a scent that would lead them to Charlotte Schilling and her 10 year-old son Owen. "We found nothing, the only scent the dog has picked up so far is where the car was parked and started following the scent on the concrete and on the side of the road going out of the park," said DJ Ginsberg, U.S. ATV Search and Rescue Team.

Why does this little detail always seem to pop up in missing cases? Still catching up on the details, but I hope these two are found safe and sound!

IMO, if her father-in-law said they were having 'marital problems', then I suspect it is worse than that.

her FIL speaks at 1:57 minute mark: saying "my son...is just so in love with her that he can't - he's up there just crying his eye's out trying to get some place."

Okay, that is..ummm...weird. I would hope that my husband would be more determined to find me and begging me to come home so we can talk RATHER than "crying his eyes out" given that they all think she ran away to California to family. Also, maybe I am getting cynical, but the whole, "he is so in love with her" thing that is attributed to husbands and boyfriends makes me cringe. I guess everyone reacts differently though. no offense anyone--something--I don't know what---just doesn't sit right with me on this one.

Other packed bags could've been in the trunk/back seat but they might want a small cooler closer for easier access OR placed it where it was most convenient, knowing that they would be abandoning the car soon enough anyway.

I think she took off with her son. I hope she doesn't run into any trouble along the way. Who would be helping her and why? I hope whoever she's with is legit.

Okay, so it seems as though she had some stuff in her car based on the fact that she is seen to apparently move something around so OS can get in. Didn't she pick him up from school? Wouldn't there have been a space already in the car from the trip from school to the store?

So the stuff in the car. If it is that crammed they were obviously planning for a long trip. Like Lucid, was there anything (besides purse stuff) in the car when it was found? If the car is found to be empty, we obviously can deduce that the things were moved from one car to another car.

Like cluciano says above staging it like a kidnapping doesn't make much sense to me. I could see her leaving the car by the lake. But why go to the extra effort of dumping the purse contents by IIRC the lake? (one report somewhere said by the lake and another said in the trunk so I am not sure). Is there a history of police calls to their address? I would assume you would have to be in deep fear of your husband to leave your friends and family rather than going through a typical divorce.

looking back over details i found this...

snipped...One of our theories is that she may be with friends in the Lake Manawa or Council Bluffs area,” Rathman said. “With her car being where it was, we’re wondering if someone she knows just picked her up and if she’s staying somewhere in the Lake Manawa-Council Bluffs area.”

...He said police seized the vehicle in hopes that Schilling would call and report it stolen. If the mother and son aren’t found by Monday, Schilling said, police will conduct a forensic analysis of its interior and contents.

Oh great, marital problems the husband doesn't mention but his father does... and the one daughter, L is 20. I noticed in the media the children are mentioned as "her children" versus their children. I wonder if that is from the media or did her husband refer to them as "her children". Also, is Owen the only child of the 3 who is a minor?

This doesn't sound good. Especially her not showing up for mothers day.
Praying against all odds they are safe and are found soon.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

While she does bring attention to missing people, which I appreciate, she completely sensationalizes everything and turns conjecture into percieved facts. Not helpful.

Like Dr. Phil? Oprah? The Doctors? They all do it. Unfortunately, it's how information/news type shows work. My local news does it, as well.

FBI involved in search for missing mom, son

According to family members, Charlotte Schilling was last seen picking up her 10-year-old son, Owen, from Wake Robin Elementary School in Bellevue Thursday morning.

Police said Schilling's car was found abandoned a day later at Lake Manawa with her wallet and cellphone still inside.

The two were spotted at a Kohl's in Council Bluffs before the car was found. Authorities believe that's where Schilling bought clothes for the boy.

Investigators said they are proceeding as if the child was kidnapped; however, they don't believe anyone is in danger and the mother does not face any charges.

http://www.kcci.com/news/central-iow...5/-/index.html
Did school get out early on Thursday, or did she take him out of school? This story makes it sound like she took him out of school and then they went clothes shopping at Kohl's?

How old are the other children? Is Owen the youngest?
