Oregon Authorities Looking for Missing Couple After They Left to Cut Down Christmas Tree

MEDFORD, Ore. — A search is under way for an Oregon couple who have been missing since Tuesday morning, when they told their children they were leaving to go cut down a Christmas tree.

Authorities say searchers on snowmobiles and ATVs are combing snowy, high-elevation forests in southern Oregon for Jennifer and Keith Lee of Medford.

OH NO! I just watched a movie on TV tonight about a couple who were snowmobiling in Idaho some years ago and got stranded. They were found on Christmas Eve after six days in a snowstorm!

for this couple to have the same miracle!!! I wonder how high up they were?

The search focused on the high Cascades between Medford and Klamath Falls after police found a piece of paper in the couple's home with the numbers 140 and 37 written on it, an apparent reference to two highways that intersect at Fish Lake near the crest of the mountains, police Sgt. Mike Budreau said.

"It's cold weather and not a lot of snow, but there's ice out there," making backcountry roads treacherous, said Rowland. "If the car tipped over, it's not going to be easy to spot."

Helicopter and ground searches turned up nothing in the Siskiyou Mountains south of Medford, where the couple got stuck for four hours while getting their tree last year, Budreau said.

Fish Lake is in snow zone.

More than likely, other tree permits were issued for this same
area. I wonder if any of the other people looking for their
Christmas tree saw them that day?

They got stranded for four hours last year.
I hope they had the car packed with food, water,
emergency beacons, flares, blankets, warm clothing.

pics of Fish Lake in the summer.

They have been out two nights in the freezing cold.
Prayers that they will be found soon.

Searchers combed icy mountain roads near the crest of the Cascade Range

<snip>

"It's cold weather and not a lot of snow, but there's ice out there," making backcountry roads treacherous, Rowland said. "If the car tipped over, it's not going to be easy to spot."

The couple did tell their four kids, ages 8 to 18, that they hoped to bring back a silvertip fir, a prized tree found only at high elevations.

Rowland said about 45 searchers planned to hunt for the couple through the night in temperatures that dipped into the teens and mid-20s.

Helicopter and ground searches turned up nothing in the Siskiyou Mountains south of Medford, where the couple got stuck for four hours while getting their tree last year, Budreau said.

A helicopter joined the search in the Cascades until darkness fell, Rowland said.

Lt. Rowland says the couple is in good condition

Looks like they were found!

UPDATE 6 AM: Jackson County Search and Rescue says Keith and Jennifer Lee had been stuck in the snow since 1:00 Tuesday when they went looking for a Christmas tree.

Thursday morning they called the Sheriff's Office after hearing on the radio that search and rescue was looking for them.

Lt. Pat Rowland with Search and Rescue says the couple was likely just outside of their search area across the California border, but plans were under way to extend the search there Thursday morning.

Lt. Rowland says the couple is in good condition, but Jennifer will be checked out for possible frost bite.

The couple has four children, age 8 to 18.

I'm so glad they were found. That's next door to my town. Crimes in my area - be gone!!

It's pretty common here to get stuck in the snow but MOST people who would be in the snow here are very good at being boyscout about it.

So glad they were found safe!!!! Happy ending!

But...they called police when they heard that they were being looked for? Which means they had access to a phone. Why the heck didn't they call someone sooner? Not necessarily the police. Just family. Or someone to ask for help getting out of the snow. ?????

Scratch that last comment.

It appears they got their car free this morning and heard on the radio, and called when they hit an area with cell phone service.

"Did they get their tree, by the way?"

"Don't know. Really don't know"

The first question the youngest child asked the couple was whether they got a prize silvertip fir, which grows at high elevations.

"We did get the tree," Lee said.

Oh! Good to know. Glad they were able to get the car free! I'm glad they didn't actually sit there for 2 days, with cell service, and not call anyone.

I'm glad they got their tree, too. Although maybe next year a tree from Walmart would be best...and safer.
