Family seeks help in finding missing Montebello man

MONTEBELLO - The family of an autistic man is looking for help after the man went missing more than a month ago.

David Kelty was last seen Jan. 13 by a caretaker at his Montebello apartment.

The 44-year-old autistic takes medication for a blood clotting condition. Police don't suspect foul play.

"We're worried about David. We want to know where he is. We want him back," said Kimberly Kelty, who is Kelty's sister-in-law.

"Maybe he's looking for his mother. Maybe he got confused."

She said they invited Kelty's mother, Roberta,to live with them in Tennessee last year when county officials wouldn't let the older woman take care of Kelty anymore.

Sgt. Luis Lopez said Kelty lives in the 600 block of Howard Avenue. A caretaker checks on him. He was last seen the afternoon of Jan. 13.

He frequently uses the Montebello Bus Lines and is known to travel throughout Southern California.

"He knows how to use the bus. It wasn't uncommon for him to walk away and get on the bus. But he always comes back," Lopez said.

"He lives by himself and is able to function on his own. But it's been a month. Maybe he got sick and is a John Doe in some facility," Lopez said.

Police checked with hospitals and also put out a medical alert.

"We haven't gotten any calls from anybody," Lopez said.

It wasn't the firt time Kelty has disappeared.

He went missing 15 years ago when he ditched his brother as they were coming back from the Rose Parade. He returned three months later. But he didn't have the blood clot condition then.

She said Kelty takes medication for his autism and for deep vein thrombosis.

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute defines DVT as a blood clot that forms in a vein deep in the body. Most of these types of clots happen in the thigh or lower leg but also can occur in other parts of the body, according to the institute.

While Kelty is in his 40s, Robert Kelty said his brother probably has the mind of a teenager. He would like to know what happened to Kelty.

"(His mother) says he probably thinks he's in trouble for being gone so long and is scared," Kimberly Kelty said.

The family posts an earlier story about Kelty's disappearance online twice a day hoping for any lead.

"He's out there somewhere, you know," Kimberly Kelty said. She urged anyone who saw him to call Montebello police, local police or 9-1-1.

Kelty is white, stands 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighs 210 pounds, has brown-and-gray hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a dark-colored jacket. Family members said if he's unable to shave, he would have a curly beard.

I am happy to report that Mr. Kelty was located in the City of Los Angeles a few days after being reported missing. To our knowledge he is back home and doing well.
