I admit my previous ignorance of the "Oregon Trail" that others have mentioned here. Having read up on it, seems unlikely these remains are from that period? Already they know the probable age of the child from the remains and sounds as if they were more or less intact (from the press release anyway) - unlikely surely after so long?
Also if there was animal activity involved would it be identifiable so quickly?
I doubt it will be DeOrr, but let's hope this other missing little one can be identified and a name given. So sad.

Kinda reminds me of those animals out in the desert they recently found burying a dead cow. Wonder how many other things were buried by them, or now by badgers? Since it didnt seem to be an american indian thing, I'm hoping this leads to some missing person and their family can have some answers. Does seem pretty far away to be Deorr though.

I keep coming back to the absence of fibers. If this is a more recent burial, the lack of fibers indicates to me that the poor child was buried naked, clearly for the purpose of leaving no clues. A parent who was covering up an accident wouldn't necessarily think like that IMO. In their grief, I think they would tenderly wrap the child in a blanket, not thinking of forensics. Even a murdered child is usually found dressed. A child buried naked has been thrown away IMO. If this turns out to be DeOrr, remembering his mother clutching his blanket in the first interview...I would have no words. :(

When I heard the news about a child's body, my first thought was Deorr. The release leaves a lot of questions, though, so I am trying to patiently wait for more info.

One thing that doesn't raise doubts that it could be Deorr for me, though, is the location. Mountain Home is off of I-84, the major east-west thoroughfare in southern Idaho. A 3 hour drive on that route would be a short trip for a long haul driver. There are some highways that connect either IF or Leadore to Elmore county that are pretty remote if the assumption is that they were flying under the radar rather than incorporating dad's truck route into the plan. For example, 26 runs along the northern edge of Craters of the Moon monument. It gets pretty lonely out there pretty quick. Plus if the motive is to cover up a crime, hiding the body closer to Boise might have been seen as more sly than hiding him somewhere in the eastern part of the state.

Blessing to the child whose body was found and any family who loved them. Whoever they are, however they died their life was so short. If foul play is involved may the DNA bring justice and resolution.

That was badgers.

I remember a missing grown male being found in a badger den many years ago here in Idaho. He had died of natural causes if I'm remembering correctly but was found buried deep in a badger den. They are wicked little animals. I watched one walk down my driveway a few years ago and I freaked out. I did not want him setting up camp on my acreage. Fortunately my neighbor worked with a wolverine foundation and was knowledgeable enough about badgers to successfully trap the ugly little critter.

Oh see I read that and that it was near the Oregon trail and figured it was a pioneer child who was wearing cotton or another natural fiber which would degrade faster than synthetic fibers. Idk

Looking at kids missing in that area and age range. Interestingly, except for April Bowdish who went missing about the same time as DeOrr, they're all boys.

Two boys missing from the Boise area in the 1980's, which is a bit longer than the time frame estimated:

Curtis Fair, missing from Nampa ID in 1980: http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/f/fair_curtis.html

Jason Cannon, missing from Boise in 1983. http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/c/cannon_jason.html

Interestingly, they're both age 2 and both blond and cute like DeOrr.

Ruben Felix disappeared in 1997 so he fits the time frame better. He disappeared from Shoshone, ID, near Twin Falls, so also a geographic possibility.

There's also Richard Barnett, missing from Grangeville in 1982, but that's several hours north so less likely. https://www.findthemissing.org/en/cases/2070/1/

It certainly could be a pioneer child or one from 15-20+ years ago. I was just doing a "what if" it was buried recently, thinking of DeOrr's time frame. No fabric would have a chance to disappear. I hope the child can be identified quickly. Not so likely if it's a pioneer child. :(

Sad no matter. My family was big into pioneer stories, and I was always horrified at the thought of dying on the trail and being buried and "left behind."

Sigh. Where is little DeOrr? :(

How scary for you. We never know how little kids will react to stories. I can't imagine the grief of those pioneer mothers, leaving their babies behind in the wilderness. And now so many kids are just thrown away in one way or another by parents who don't care about them. :(
