Woman disappears after leaving for camping trip
POSTED: February 24, 2010 Save | Print | Email

Quote:
Police are looking for a 43-year-old woman who was reported missing Monday after she had planned to spend Sunday night camping in the Pauwela area.

Laura Vogel is described as Caucasian, 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighing 140 pounds with blond hair and blue eyes.

According to her friend, Lulu Agan, Vogel was wearing dark gray sweatpants and a dusky blue T-shirt when she was last seen leaving a friend's house Upcountry at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Vogel was last heard from when she sent a text message at 8:20 p.m. Sunday.

When police recovered her van along the cliff line near Pauwela lighthouse Monday morning, her wallet and mobile phone were missing.

Vogel, an avid surfer and hiker, had been living on Maui for about six months and working as a self-employed tutor, Agan said. She said Vogel planned to spend Sunday night camping alone in her van.

A friend called police to report Vogel missing after she missed a tutoring session Monday morning and friends couldn't reach her.

Anyone who has seen Vogel or who has information about her whereabouts is asked to call the police Criminal Investigation Division at 244-6425 during regular business hours or 244-6400 during nonbusiness hours.

Friends are organizing a land search for Vogel. Anyone who wants to help can call Agan at 633-6707.

I just heard about this case on JVM. Do we have any info about her? Married, family, where she lives, etc.
her van was found w/ keys in it, and no one has heard from her.
Any cell records or bank card usage that we know of?

Exclamation HI - Laura Vogel, 43, Maui County, 21 Feb 2010 - Car found

Maui police say the active search for 43-year-old Laura Vogel has been suspended until new evidence is found, but relatives believe "something went desperately wrong."

Vogel, a freelance tutor and avid camper, was last heard from on Feb. 21 when she sent a text message to a friend indicating she was "meeting all the locals" in an area known as the birthing pools in Haiku, in Maui County.

Vogel’s friends found her van near the Pauwela lighthouse on Feb. 22. Her keys were inside, which was not unusual, but her cell phone and wallet were missing, said Lt. John Jakubczak of the Maui Police Department. A day later, the back portion of a cell phone believed to be Vogel’s was found nearby.

Tracking dogs hunted fruitlessly for four days along the coastline, and no evidence of foul play or signs of an accident were found during searches of areas that covered heavy vegetation and rocky cliffs. Now, Jakubczak said, search efforts will remain suspended until there is new information.

“What we’re saying is, it’s very suspicious,” he said. “But again, we’re not listing it as foul play because there’s no evidence of foul play at this moment.”

Jakubczak said two calls were made from Vogel’s phone on the night she vanished, including one to a number not previously called on that line. And, he said, the man to whom the number was registered had not been using the line for nearly 10 years. He said the unidentified man is a "person of interest" in the case.

JVM says investigator says Laura was parked on private property where transients live in cars...investigator said it was unusual for someone camping to park there.

Laura's SIL on the show & brother on the phone......bro. says LE said unusual for people to be there for the nite, but bro. says the view is beautiful & Laura had been there before.

Talking about the last phone call made to the man w/ the gruff voice....brother saying cellphone has provided useful information...people being brought in & being questioned.

Laura's mom saying she thinks LE believes Laura fell from cliff....crying, that she needs closure.

SIL saying they believe foul play involved....LE in full-force investigation...trying to find the people Laura was w/ the nite she disappeared....she'd texted a message she was meeting all the locals.

JVM questioning why anyone would go hiking at nite....transients saying they know absolutely nothing....SIL says transient acting suspiciously.

Judge Marilyn saying they need to get people out there talking to people.

Marc Harrold, LEO, agreeing they need to talk to the transients.

Laura Vogel, 43, a New Mexico State University graduate who left Las Cruces a decade ago for Albuquerque and since moved to Maui to tutor, went missing a week and a half ago. Hawaiian police suspended their search Tuesday when the trail went cold.

Her friends and family are working to keep the search effort alive by hiring a private investigator, said Renee Waskiewicz, a friend in Las Cruces.

Just checking in to see if there is any news on this case. No reports on the media that I have seen for a few days.
Does anyone know if it was found out who it was she was talking to on her cell phone just prior to her disappearance?

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Family and friends held a vigil Thursday night for an Albuquerque woman who vanished almost two weeks ago.

Laura Vogel, 43, loves the outdoors. The teacher recently moved to Hawaii, and was exploring what the islands had to offer.

However, a quick camping trip turned into a long, agonizing wait for her friends and family after she went missing.

“You know where she is Lord and we trust that you will keep her safe," said a friend during the vigil.

Laura Vogel Missing: Cops Call Off Search While Family Fears "Foul Play"
Posted by Carlin DeGuerin Miller

MAUI, Hawaii (CBS) Laura Vogel, 43, has been missing for over three weeks after going on a solo camping trip in Maui, and her family is beginning to suspect foul play.

Friends reported Laura, a self-employed tutor, missing on Feb. 22 after she didn't show up for a tutoring session and they failed to reach her. Vogel told a friend she planned to camp alone Feb. 21 and sent a text message to a friend that night saying "I'm camped down the way from birthing pools and meeting all the locals."

That was the last anyone heard from her.

HAIKU, Hawaii -- Maui police said they have questioned a person of interest in the case of Laura Vogel who disappeared while camping nearly a month ago.
Investigators questioned the man whose cell phone was the last number dialed from Laura Vogel's phone, information gathered from her phone records.

"Right now, he's denying knowledge of Laura Vogel or meeting her or having a conversation with her," said Maui police Lt. John Jakubczak. "He indicated his phone was recently stolen prior to Miss Vogel being reported missing. So we're still looking into that. We're trying to check out his story and we'll continue talking to him."
