Maybe it wasn't mercury but something else but he I think wanted her to die there. I also think if it was pills he staged the bottle somewhere. When his plan didn't work, he went to plan B with daddy's help.

Is mercury hard to get any more? I thought it was kind of scarce these days. Not at all sure, though, haven't needed any lately.
